The 2025 Giro d’Italia’s complete route has finally been made public. For this year, the Grand Tour will begin in Albania and end in Rome with yet another thrilling finale. Albania will be hosting the opening stage for the first time, starting with a challenging 21-stage race with 52,500 metres of climbing, more than 10,000 metres from the previous year.
On May 9 in Durres, the 15th Grande Partenza will be held abroad and will begin with the peloton completing three peaks on a 164-kilometre route to Tirana, the capital of Albania. Moreover, the second stage will be an individual time trial, and the third and last stage in Albania will begin and end in Vlore.
Afterwards, the peloton travels south to north across the Italian peninsula, making stops in beautiful places such as Lecce, Matera, Naples, Lucca, Pisa, and Siena. The reigning champion, Tadej Pogacar, will have a visit to his home country during a cross-border Stage 14 race from Treviso to the Slovenian town of Nova Gorica.
Furthermore, the mountain stages that precede the grandstand finish in Rome will be the centre of attention. Stage 19, which has three category one climbs between Biella and Champoluc, is also noteworthy. The penultimate stage, the Colle delle Finestre, a difficult 8 km gravel road ride, will have the greatest climb.
For three consecutive years, the final Stage 21 will take place in Rome, the capital of Italy, on June 1. From July 6-13, the 2025 Giro d’Italia Women will also start with an ITT in Bergamo, in the north, and end with a 138-kilometre Stage 8 run from Forli to Imola.
Tadej Pogacar hopes to defend his title in the men’s race, while Elisa Longo Borghini will defend her title in the women’s race.
The Grand Tour event’s organizers confirmed that Albania will host the 2025 Giro d’Italia.
Next year on May 9, the Giro will start with three test stages in Albania before heading to southern Italy. The remaining 19 stages will take place in Italy, with an early rest day on May 12 at Puglia.
Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama stated: “We beat bigger and richer nations to secure the Grand Partenza of the Giro, and we can’t wait to show our country to millions of people around the world. I’ve always said that Albania is a little Italy and now with the Giro we’ll be Italy on the other side of the Adriatic.”
This is the first time the Giro has begun outside of Italy since 2022, when the first stage started in Hungary.
The first three stages
After a lengthy ascent, the first stage will arrive in Gracen from Durres, Albania. The athletes will then proceed to Tirana, the Albanian capital, and will have to complete two laps of a 22.2-kilometre course that includes a challenging Surrel climb.
The second stage is a 13.7-kilometre individual time trial around Tirana, and the third and final stage is a 160-kilometre race across many hills that starts and finishes in Vlore.
Mauro Vegni, Giro d’Italia race director, said: “We’ve avoided the cliche of a start for sprinters… The first stage has a testing finishing circuit, the time trial has a climb mid-stage and the third stage has a major climb late on, the Qafa E Llogarase.”
“We believe these opening stages will challenge the general classification contenders and that we might see the first time gaps among the big names… We will offer a thrilling start to the Giro, both for the local audience and for those following the race from home,” Vegni added.
For the first time in five years, the Tour de France will take place solely in France this coming 2025 season. Now with 21 stages, the 112th Grand Tour will begin in Lille on July 5 and will conclude in Paris on July 27.
Race director Christian Prudhomme expressed: “We decided to bring the Tour home, it was high time after all the foreign starts.”
There will be two time-trials and six mountain-top finishes on the 3,320 km (2,063-mile) Tour, with the majority of the first leg being on the plains.
Prudhomme added: “A week in the plains is not the joy ride it was in the old days. We have cut the sprint stages and laid traps everywhere…I don’t think Thierry Gouvenou, who mapped out the route, left a single climb [untouched] between Lille and Brittany.”
In recent years, the Tour raced in Andorra in 2021, Copenhagen in 2022, Bilbao in 2023, and Florence in 2024. The Champs-Elysees finale will return for the 2025 race on the 50th anniversary of its inaugural finish there. Due to the Olympics this year, the Tour concluded outside of Paris for the first time.
In the upcoming 2025 season, five-time Grand Tour winner Primoz Roglic plans to compete in the Tour de France as well as the Giro d’Italia.
For the first time since his overall victory in 2023, when he passed Geraint Thomas on the final stage, the Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe captain will be competing at the Giro. Additionally, he has unresolved business with the Tour de France, which he will once again aim for after losing to fellow countryman Tadej Pogacar in 2020 and crashing out last year.
Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe Head Sport Director Rolf Aldag said in a press conference: “To start with the Giro, luckily, we aligned with the idea that Primoz will target the Giro d’Italia in combination with the Tour de France.”
Aldag added: “Going to the Tour de France, Primož is also going to be our leader there… Dani Martinez is also planning to do the double and then we’re going to have more [riders] join. We know how important the climbs are; the Tour is decided there, so Aleksandr Vlasov will also be there.”
Moreover, Roglic remarked: “To choose the Giro, we decided it quite easily because somehow I thought it would be cool to come close to Slovenia again.” Regarding the Tour, he said: “It would be a pity if I wouldn’t be there, so looking from that view it was easy.”
Roglic left his old team, Visma-Lease a Bike, who switched to Vingegaard as their leader because they thought he could still fight for the Tour de France. During his first Tour in Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe colours this summer, it fell apart when he pulled out of the race on Stage 12 because of the effects of a collision.
He has suffered years of misfortune at the race, losing the yellow jersey on the final stage in 2020 and withdrawing after another crash in 2022.
