South Carolina women’s basketball team won a third national title, defeating Iowa with a record of 87-75. After finishing with a perfect 38-0 season, the Gamecocks were given a standing ovation at Colonial Life Arena in Columbia, South Carolina.
Since taking over as head coach in 2008, Dawn Staley has helped South Carolina become a major contender in NCAA basketball. The Gamecocks have won three national titles in her three years (2017, 2022, and 2024) as coach.
With their victory over Iowa, South Carolina was able to get payback on the Hawkeyes for their Final Four loss the previous year, depriving collegiate standout Caitlin Clark of a flawless college basketball career.
South Carolina – Third win
Staley admitted that the team worked hard for this success and said: “All of them, every one of them took their turn in making an impact on any given night for our team to be successful, and they did it in a way where they lifted each other. And that is truly, truly an organic chemistry that you couldn’t pay real money to produce.”
The South Carolina team had described their 2024 game as a “revenge tour,” but it appears that they have their goals set for the next season.
“The revenge tour is over… Now, it’s time for the repeat tour!” sophomore guard Raven Johnson, who defensively helped tamper down Clark, declared.
The college student body was excited about their winning team, but the loudest applause of the day may have come when Staley announced that classes would be suspended for the remainder of the day.
