Nafissatou Thiam is now the leading female athlete in the first two heptathlon events of the European Athletics Championships happening in Rome. The Olympic champion is currently at the forefront of the event after winning the 100-metre hurdles in 13.74 seconds and then making a stunning leap of 1.95 metres to take the top spot in the rankings.
One of her opponents, Katarina Johnson-Thompson of Great Britain, is now 143 points behind her. In the 100-metre hurdles, event, the world champion raced 13.66 seconds and placed seventh in her heat.
Athletes’ current statistics
With 2,186 points, Thiam leads in first place. Fellow Belgian Noor Vidts gained 2,078 points, Sveva Gerevini of Italy had 2,050 points, Johnson-Thompson with 2,043 points, and Jana Koscak of Croatia with 2,043 points.
Moreover, Jade O’Dowda is in sixth place overall with 2,037 points after running 13.70 seconds in the 100-metre hurdles. On her third attempt, she cleared the bar four times in a row and cleared 1.83 metres in the high jump.
In other related news, Jemma Reekie of Britain won her heat in the women’s 1500m with a record of 4 minutes, 6.68 seconds. She advances to the finals joining fellow countrywomen Georgia Bell (4:12.01) and Katie Snowden (4:12.17), who placed second and third in their respective heats.
Additionally, Elliot Giles (1:46.44), the leader of the British team, and Thomas Randolph (1:45.58) are moving forward to the men’s 800m semi-finals. As for the men’s long jump final, Jacob Fincham-Dukes jumped 8.18 metres to qualify. Lizzie Bird of Great Britain also advanced to the women’s 3000m steeplechase finals as she won fourth place in her heat with a record of 9:32.87.
