Carlos Alcaraz of Spain successfully defended his championship title after defeating Novak Djokovic of Serbia 6-2, 6-2, 7-6(4) in a rematch of last year’s Wimbledon final.
With his exceptional playing, Alcaraz now has four Grand Slam trophies and an unblemished record in major finals. He has won two Wimbledon titles, the US Open in 2022, and the French Open last month.
Moreover, the loss deprived Djokovic of a 25th Grand Slam victory, which would have moved him up to equal Margaret Court’s record of eight Wimbledon singles victories.
Highlights of the match
After a close first game lasting fourteen minutes, in which Alcaraz pounced on his sixth break point, the third-seeded youngster, who is 21 years old, dropped the hammer and breezed through the opening set, thanks to a strong serve.
At the beginning of the second set, second seed Djokovic found himself under increased strain as Alcaraz utilized the 37-year-old’s early struggles to break and take advantage of his poor serve to take an overwhelming two-set lead.
In the third set, Djokovic and Alcaraz battled back and forth until the Spaniard broke with a powerful backhand winner to take a 5-4 lead. But even then, he had wasted three match points and lost the serve. When Djokovic crashed a return into the net in the tiebreak, Alcaraz steadied down to gain his victory.
