The St. Louis Cardinals have won five World Series since 1964. One dream accomplishment, though, has always eluded them: winning at Yankee Stadium. Now that the long-standing obstacle has been surmounted, the team is experiencing a historic moment.
On Saturday, the Cardinals won an exciting 6-5 game to end a 60-year losing record to the Yankees away from home.
The Cardinals defeated the Yankees, thanks to a three-run extravaganza by Brendan Donovan and crucial RBIs from Nolan Arenado and Ivan Herrera. Because of a crucial blunder that gave the Cardinals an unearned run that ended up being the game-winning run, New York’s mistakes proved costly.
Though it may seem unbelievable, there is more to the story of the 60-year drought. The Cardinals’ last victory over the Yankees at Yankee Stadium dates back to the 1964 World Series when the team won the pennant under the direction of the great Bob Gibson. It is noteworthy that in all of the Cardinals’ history, they have never won a regular-season game at Yankee Stadium outside of the postseason.
When word spread about the Cardinals’ historic victory, MLB fans were completely taken aback, and social media was ablaze with emotions. Enthusiasts were giddy with anticipation after the historic victory, wanting to rejoice and share their ideas.
One fan stated; “The drought is over.”
Another stated: “It is inconceivable that it has been so long.
“With a 68-68 record and 6.5 games behind a wildcard place, our squad has a difficult path ahead of them. In the meantime, the Yankees are comfortably atop Major League Baseball right now.
“The disparity between where we are right now and the Yankees’ incredible success serves as a reminder of how difficult it will be for us to qualify for the postseason.”
