Jannik Sinner says he is confident about the outcome of the doping allegations against him but is uncomfortable with the situation.
The athlete appeared to have avoided suspension after being cleared by an independent tribunal of the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) despite testing positive for the illegal substance clostebol. In recent news, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) announced its appeal against the decision, calling for Sinner’s suspension for one to two years.
Sinner said: “I’m still surprised… But I will collaborate like I did before. I had three hearings in which the three hearings went all my way, which was good. But now let’s see. But I’m very confident that it comes out very, very positively. I would be very, very surprised if it would be the opposite side.”
He added: “But it’s not in a situation where I feel comfortable in, that’s for sure, because I thought it was over. And now once again. So it’s not easy.”
However, he appeared to put any distractions away as he reached the finals of the China Open this week. Sinner was defeated by Alcaraz in a thrilling match, after which both athletes shared a plane together to go to the Shanghai Masters.
Sinner will play against world no. 93 Taro Daniel at the start of his Shanghai Masters campaign.
