Bianca Andreescu, the former US champion, will not participate in Canada’s effort to defend their Billie Jean King Cup title this season.

The athlete, who struggled with ailments all season, made her comeback to competition for the first time since the 2024 US Open. Last October, she participated in two tournaments in Japan, including one where she advanced to the quarter-finals of the WTA-500 in Tokyo.

Tennis Canada reported that even though Andreescu’s recent performances were encouraging, recuperation and rest are still essential for the 2019 US Open winner.  The athlete said: “I’m disappointed not to be in a position to join the team in Malaga, but I have faith in their ability to defend the title… Our team has a great energy and dynamic. If anyone can win back-to-back titles, it’s these players.”

As defending winners, Canada automatically advanced to the quarter-finals of the Billie Jean King Cup Finals. The team will face the winner of Britain vs. Germany on November 17 in Malaga.

Leylah Fernandez, Rebecca Marino, Gabriela Dabrowski, and Marina Stakusic will now make up the Canadian team, and they will attempt to become the first team to defend their world title since Czechia in 2016.
