After defeating Bexcy Mateus in a thrilling boxing match, WBA welterweight champion Lauren Price says she wants to bring professional boxing back to Wales.
The 30-year-old athlete earned her second stoppage victory in her unbeaten eight-fight professional career in her first championship defence. Now, Price is expected to battle against Natasha Jonas, the IBF and WBC champion, in the main event.
Price said: “I believe I am the best at 147lbs… Fight by fight I keep learning, I have so much more to come… I want to bring big-time boxing back to Wales.”
Price had previously fought in Wales, defeating Jessica McCaskill in May 2024 to win the title of world champion for the first time. Despite the fact that her next match with Jonas might happen outside of Wales, she has stated that she wants to battle her fellow Brit.
The athlete declared: “For the British fans I would love to fight Tash… It’s one hell of a fight for British fans and boxing in general.”
She added: “In this pro game you have to call the shots. If you’re a world champion and you have titles you should fight anyone… I have a few years in me but next year I want to be chasing belts. I want to be an undisputed world champion.”
Regarding the outcome of the upcoming fight, Price remarked: “I’m in my prime, she’s coming towards the end of her career… I respect that, but I believe I win that fight.”
“If it was down to me, we would have been fighting here tonight… But she [Jonas] doesn’t want the fight, I get it,” she said.
