American speed skater Jordan Stolz recently won the gold medal in the 500 metres in Beijing, racking up his fourth consecutive victory at the ISU Speed Skating World Cup.
This recent win is in addition to his other victories in the first 500, 1,500, and 1,000 metres.
The athlete finished the second 500-metre event with a performance record of 34.39 seconds, 0.08 seconds faster than Dutchman Jenning de Boo, at the Beijing National Speed Skating Oval.
Stolz’s athletic performance
After winning the 500m event at the 2023 World Single Distances Speed Skating Championships, the youngster from Wisconsin became the youngest single-distance world champion in history. In this season, he has won all four 500-metre World Cup races.
Moreover, Stolz was only the third American male speed skater to qualify for the Olympics at the age of 17. He placed 13th in the 500-metre and 14th in the 1,000-metre events at the Winter Olympics in Beijing in 2022, and he has since continued his incredible performance.
Last season, the athlete had a record of 144.740 points, the most in the history of the men’s all-round championships. Stolz will be participating in the third World Cup in Calgary, Canada, this coming January 24 to 26.
The 1,500-metre race was expected to be a showdown between world champion Josh Kerr and Tokyo Olympic champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen. However, Cole Hocker shockingly defeated the two veteran athletes to finish first and win the gold medal.
The American won with an Olympic record time of 3:27.65 as he crossed the finish line and completed an outstanding sprint finish. With a time of 3:27.79, Kerr of Great Britain won the silver medal, and Yared Nuguse, another American, finished third.
After his victory, Hocker said: “That’s an unbelievable feeling… I just felt like I was getting carried by the stadium and God. My body just kind of did it for me. My mind was all there and I saw that finish line.”
The athlete added: “Winning gold was my goal this entire year. I wrote that down and I repeated it to myself even if I didn’t believe it. My performances showed me that I was capable of running 3:27, whatever it took. I knew I was a medal contender, and I knew that if I get it right, it would be a gold medal. I’ve been saying that.”
Highlights of the race
Ingebrigtsen, who held the Olympic record in this competition three years ago, led the charge with Kerr close behind. It appeared that one of them would win the race as many had predicted. When Kerr passed the Norwegian in the final 100 metres, he looked sure to win, just as he had at the Budapest world championships last year.
However, Hocker drove up the inside of the finishing straight in an exceptionally timed burst.
He is the first American to win this event after Matthew Centrowitz in the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Another American finished third behind second-placed Kerr.
Nuguse suddenly came up from behind and overtook Ingebristen to win the bronze.
For the first time in the history of the modern Games, the United States had two men on the 1,500m podium.
Prior to the Olympics, Hocker’s sole significant achievement was a silver medal in the 1,500-metre at the World Indoor Championships this year, while Nuguse’s was a medal in the same tournament in the 3,000-metre
This was truly an unexpected but outstanding performance for middle-distance running for the United States.
19-year-old Ilia Malinin won the men’s title at the World Figure Skating Championships in Montreal on Saturday. His record-breaking free skate routine was set to the theme music for HBO’s Succession. His score of 227.9 is the highest-ever free skating score in the history of the competition.
At the World Figure Skating Championships, the 19-year-old American prodigy Malinin created history. With the highest points ever received. This is a further testament to Malinin’s status as a forerunner in the sport with his unequaled jump.
Malinin’s Victory
Malinin also made history in October 2022 when he became the first skater to successfully execute a quadruple axel leap in a competitive setting. He stunned the audience once more with the identical jump at the global championships more than a year later, shooting from third to first place with his captivating routine set to the song Succession.
He performed an astounding five extra quadruple jumps in addition to a jaw-dropping quadruple axel in a stunning show of talent and athleticism that electrified the stadium with a symphony of mind-blowing performances. The commentators couldn’t suppress their euphoric yells, their voices ringing out with adoration for the absolute magnificence unfolding before their eyes, as the crowd burst into rapturous ovation, their enthusiasm resonating around the arena.
The audience responded with spontaneous applause as the mesmerizing melody of the Succession theme slowly developed. The artist, Malinin, later stated that this unplanned engagement was what drove his passionate performance.
After following a record-breaking performance in the free skate at the global Figure Skating Championship, landing one helped Ilia Malinin win his first-ever global championship.
The 19-year-old was in third place after the short program that happened days before. He then told reporters that he was having both physical and mental difficulties leading up to these global championships. For the free skate competition, he was drawn and gave an outstanding performance that saw him earn 227.79, the highest point ever in this competition.
Malinin declared after his victory: “It means so much to me… The last few weeks were such a mental and physical challenge to go through.”
Malinin – Last-minute decision
“I was even debating whether I should come here or not. It was the last minute, but I wanted to come here to see what I could put out on the ice. I am so glad to be here on top right now,” he added.
Skating to music from the television show “Succession,” Malinin started off his free skate with a quadruple axel, then shocked the audience by nailing five more quad jumps. He is the only man to successfully execute a quadruple axel. He defeated Kagiyama Yuma of Japan in second place and Adam Siao Him Fa of France in third.
The skater stated: “There was a little voice in my head: ‘No matter what, you have to keep fighting, keep going, no matter how bad you feel you just have to know that you’re capable of.’”
Ilia Malinin’s gold medal was the US’s second at this World Championships.
Zurich, Switzerland- Scottish middle-distance runner Josh Kerr, who was crowned the new world champion a week ago, landed a second-place finish in the men’s 1500 m event at the 2023 Zurich Diamond League in Switzerland on Friday.
Last week at the World Athletics Championship 2023, Kerr stunned the crowd as he won the 1500 m race with a record of 3:29.38 minutes. His Norwegian competitor, Jakob Ingebrigtsen, trailed closely behind him in second place with a time of 3:29.65 minutes.
When he was asked about the last 200 m of the race, he said: “Obviously there’s a very big reminiscence of Wightman in there. I was battling with Jakob pretty hard. You can see from my face that I am throwing everything I had at this guy. We were both fighting. I wanted this for my whole life and I didn’t want [to give it up]. I looked up at the screen and I didn’t see anyone coming and I made sure I pumped all the way home. I am so happy.”
In an interview, Kerr stated that the whole experience was overwhelming for him:
“It’s been a long time coming,” said Kerr, who won Olympic bronze behind the victorious Norwegian in Tokyo in 2021. “It’s quite an overwhelming experience. But I just threw my whole 16 years of this sport into that last 200m and didn’t let up until the end.”
But this celebration proved to be short-lived when he fell short by a mere 0.02 seconds and came in second in Zurich.
The 25-year-old Scottish ace clocked out at 3:30.51 minutes at the finish line, coming in second behind the USA’s representative, Yared Nuguse, who clocked out at 3:30.49 minutes. Kenya’s representative, Abel Kipsang, came in third with a time of 3:30.85 minutes.
“I worked really hard, made sure that I gave everything out there,” said Kerr in an interview after the race.
But coming in second in a field of strong middle-distance runners is no joke. Bringing home the silver medal to Great Britain is still a wonderful feat.
Olympics 2024: Get to know American sprinting superstar Noah Lyles
The American sprinting sensation and Olympic bronze medalist Noah Lyles has currently won six world titles, four Diamond League final trophies, and a massive list of other competitive honors in the entirety of his athletic career.
Last year, Lyles successfully reached his greatest achievement by retaining his 200m title from the previous two years, making him a three-peat champion at the 2023 World Championship in Budapest. More so, he became the first person to bag gold in the 100m, 200m, and 4x100m relays, following the footsteps of Jamaican legend Usain Bolt back in 2015. As an admirer of Bolt, Lyles had always desired to beat his outstanding records in the 100m and 200m divisions.
The fastest man in the world
In a media interview, Lyles declared that he believed to be the fastest man in the world and would break Usain Bolt’s records.
“I’ve always known that I’m the fastest man in the world.. Well, in my head, I think I’m going to break it. I’m planning to break it,” he confidently said.
With this goal in mind, Lyles had a plan of winning four gold medals at the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympics, adding 4,400m relay to his repertoire.
The roots of his sport
Lyles aims to bring track and field’s popularity alongside other major sports. In order to do this, he pushes for the sport’s marketing visibility, even outside major competitions.
He grew up in an athletic household and had begun his career in track and field at the age of twelve. His parents, Kevin Lyles and Keisha Caine, also competed in the same sport at Seton Hall University.
Lyles gained fame after placing first in the 200m race in the 2014 Youth Olympics in Nanjing, China. He also won silver at the U18 World Championships.
Lyles VS Knighton
Alongside Lyles, Erriyon Knighton is also about to close on Usain Bolt’s 2009 world record in the 200m division. The two American athletes had gained headlines, developing a rivalry of being the top US sprinters.
Last 2022, Knighton became the fourth-fastest man in 200m history at the age of 18, with a record of 19.49 at the LSU Invitational. Apparently, the fourth fastest man before Knighton’s win was Noah Lyles.
With hopes that Knighton might even surpass Bolt’s world record of 19.19, Lyles needed to accept the fact that he was no longer the only one who is talked-about as a half-lap runner in his own country, and eventually the whole world.
The two athletes will face off at the Diamond League meet in Monaco this coming August, and one of them will prove to be the fastest 200-meter runner in the world.
