Alex Bregman

In a 2017 interview, Houston Astros star Alex Bregman disclosed that his childhood hero, Derek Jeter, was the reason behind him wearing jersey No. 2. Not many MLB fans are aware that Bregman is a huge Jeter fan.

Growing up, he frequently mimicked Jeter’s signature jump throw in his hometown of New Mexico.

Bregman said the following in an interview:

“Growing up, I was a huge fan of the Yankees and Derek Jeter. I watched him every time the Yankees were on television and I always enjoyed seeing how he conducted himself.”

He also stated, “On the field, he served as the captain and delivered when it mattered most. I wear No. 2 because he is the kind of person you want on your squad and to fight beside.”

The legendary Derek Jeter of the New York Yankees has served as an inspiration to several MLB talents of the present generation. Many aspiring athletes are still inspired to play the game they love by the legacy that the five-time Gold Glove and Silver Slugger champion has left behind. He will be inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2020.

Alex Bregman, a third baseman and shortstop for the Houston Astros, made history at Yankee Stadium by hitting his first grand slam. His club, the Houston Astros, went on to upset the New York Yankees 10-7.

The fact that Bregman hit the grand slam in front of Derek Jeter, whose uniform number was retired the same day, was the icing on the cake for him.

As for the unforgettable game, Bregman had the following to say, “The magic number tonight, I suppose, was two. Sunday Night Baseball had an awesome moment. I told [ESPN broadcaster Aaron] Boone, whom I was dining with, “Hey, you never know,” while we were out to dinner on Saturday night. It might happen on No. 2 Derek Jeter Night. Holy cow, I thought as soon as I struck it.”
