With Steph Curry and Draymond Green out of the picture, Klay Thompson—the Warrior’s second-leading scorer—has been the center of attention and scrutiny lately.
And judging from his subpar numbers, it’s evident that the 33-year-old shooting guard is going through a slump. His performances and numbers aren’t what they once were, which made many people wonder if he was past his prime or if this was merely a rut he would ultimately break out of.
Even Stephen A. Smith, one of the NBA’s leading experts and commentators, has been critical of Thompson’s shooting woes, saying, “The Klay Thompson we’re seeing right now, I don’t recognize him,” as per warriorswire.
Channing Frye has also called for Thompson to “come off the bench.”.
2023-2024 season
This season, Thompson hasn’t been able to regain his momentum and is only averaging 14.0 points, 3.3 rebounds, 2.1 assists, and 40.0 FG%.
The Warriors are likewise on a downward trajectory; they have dropped their last six games against the Oklahoma City Thunder, Denver Nuggets, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Minnesota Timberwolves.

Despite Thompson’s struggles in terms of scoring, he has been a valuable contributor to the Warriors’ rotation, providing solid defense.
And although a number of people have lost faith in the player, some still hold out hope for the return of the “Old Thompson” and his ability to become a vital member of the Warriors’ roster once more.
Thompson’s future with the Warriors
As of now, Thompson’s future with the Warriors is still questionable.
He’s played for the franchise for 13 years, but this doesn’t guarantee that they’re still going to sign him for the next season.
Last month, there have been multiple reports that the two parties are currently at a deadpoint with regards to the contract renewals.
“They are both still apart on years and money, and there’s a very real possibility that Klay Thompson goes into free agency next summer without a deal,” according to an article from Clutchpoints.
Still, Thompson was full of confidence and said he wasn’t worried about the situation and wouldn’t let it stop him from winning another championship.
