In his first professional tennis match, retired football player Diego Forlan lost 6-1, 6-1 in 47 minutes in a doubles match in Uruguay.
After being given a wildcard to the Uruguay Open in Montevideo, the former Manchester United and Atletico Madrid striker and his Argentine partner Federico Coria were defeated by Bolivian duo Boris Arias and Federico Zeballos. The event took place on the ATP Challenger Tour, a division beneath the main ATP Tour.
Forlan said: “I hadn’t even imagined, let alone dreamed of this… It’s wonderful to have played against professionals.”
He added: “The atmosphere on this court that I love so much was incredible; my friends, my family were here. It was very special, and I enjoyed it… I felt like a tennis player for a moment.”
After playing football for 20 years, Forlan resumed playing tennis more frequently. He was a talented junior tennis player in hiss. In 2023, he made his ITF Masters Tour debut after playing in the Montevideo club league with friends.
His partner Coria had advanced to the French Open third round and finished 49th in the singles rankings the previous year. Forlan stated: “I’m grateful for the opportunity to play with Fede… It’s not easy for him to enter these tournaments with an amateur beside him.”
On an emotional night in Malaga, Rafael Nadal ended his career with a loss in the Davis Cup, failing to have the fairytale finish that his career deserved.
The 38-year-old athlete lost against Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp 6-4, 6-4 in his final competitive match in the sport.
Following a lengthy on-court speech in front of his devoted followers, family, friends, and teammates after the match, a video montage of his incredible career was shown which made the athlete emotional.
Nadal said: “I was just a kid from a small village that had luck because my uncle was a tennis coach and had a family who supported me.”
He added: “A lot of people work hard but I am one of the lucky ones that life gave me the opportunity to live unforgettable experiences because of tennis. I just want to be remembered as a good person and a kid that followed their dreams.”
His announcement last month that he was retiring from the Davis Cup Final Eight raised the possibility of a final addition to his record of 14 French Open titles. With this defeat, Nadal said: “In some ways it is good, maybe, if that was my last match because I lost my first match in the Davis Cup and I lost my last one. We close the circle.”
Many of Nadal’s supporters, the majority wearing scarves with the words “Gracias Rafa” printed on them, stood to applaud him in a tribute to a great athlete.
Two sports icons collided at the Ballon d’Or: Tennis’ Novak Djokovic and football’s Lionel Messi. Although the moment was fleeting, the sports community rejoiced as the two most decorated athletes in the world shared a hug before the ceremony began.
The 2023 Ballon d’Or is a ceremony hosted by France Football magazine to honor the finest football players in the world for the 2022-23 season. So, if it’s a Football awards ceremony, why was the first-ranked Tennis star spotted there?
Well, it just so happens that Djokovic was in town for the Rolex Paris Masters 2023, his first tournament since winning the US Open back in September. And, as a football fan, he took this opportunity to meet the football stars.
At the ceremony, not only did Djokovic share a moment with Lionel Messi, he also had the opportunity to hand over the women’s Ballon d’Or trophy to FIFA World Cup winner Aitana Bonmati of Spain.
Before this, though, Djokovic was also spotted in the Stade de France in Paris, watching the Rugby World Cup Final.
Djokovic as a Football fan
In an interview, Djokovic shared that before this month, he never attended a Rugby World Cup Final or a Ballon d’Or ceremony.
“You know it’s nice to use the opportunity when I have the tournament in the city where you have some big sporting events, like the World Cup Finals of Rugby and, of course, Ballon d’Or,” the tennis star said. “ I’ve never attended neither Rugby World Cup Final nor the Ballon d’Or, so I’m really enjoying myself.”
And, when asked about whether he was a big fan of the sport, Djokovic promptly responded, “I am, of course. Most of the world, you know, football obviously is, by far, the most popular sport in the world. And I grew up watching Football, playing football. My father was a professional for some time. You know, I’m really excited to be here.”
« I’m a huge football fan! So happy to attend finally the Ballon d’Or »
After resting for six weeks and attending two big events in Paris, the world will finally see Djokovic set foot on the court once again.
He is set to compete at the Paris Masters, where he’s been dubbed the king of the tournament by tennis.com for winning the Masters 1000 event six times.
He was also recently seen training with the second-ranked Spanish player, Carlos Alcaraz, for the upcoming event.

Having just reached his first ATP final, Alcaraz’s fans were eager to see how he would fare in the tournament.
However, after his first-round defeat to Alexander Zverev, there were doubts about Alcaraz’s ability to dominate the tournament.
This loss further highlighted the fact that Alcaraz was still in a slump. After his sensational Wimbledon final performance, the Spaniard has not won a title since.
Alcaraz puts doubts to rest
But eventually, the Spaniard was able to put those doubts to rest when he snatched his first win at the finals against Andrey Rublev with a straight set victory of 7-5, 6-2.
He then followed this up with a 6-4, 6-4 win over the world’s third-ranked player, Daniil Medvedev.
As a result, Alcaraz was able to qualify for the semi-finals of the tournament, replicating Nadal’s performance in 2006 and thus becoming the youngest semi-finalist in ATP history.
Carlos Alcaraz just became the youngest semifinalist at the ATP Finals since Rafa Nadal in 2006.
Both Nadal and Alcaraz followed a similar pattern throughout the tournament: they both lost their opening match but recovered swiftly to win their subsequent two games before facing the world’s top-ranked players in the semi-final.
Back then, Nadal faced former world No. 1 Roger Federer and, unfortunately, got ousted in the semi-finals.
For Alcaraz, he will be facing the strongest opponent in the tournament, World No. 1 Novak Djokovic. But the question is, will he also follow in the footsteps of Nadal and lose to Djokovic?
In this regard, the fans certainly hope not.
Alcaraz on facing Djokovic: I’m excited to face Novak
In a post-match interview, Alcaraz said he was looking forward to facing Djokovic in the semi-finals of the ATP. He also expressed his admiration for the Serb’s remarkable performance throughout the year.
“It’s one of the most difficult challenges I’mgoing toa face. Facing Novak in ATP Finals, a tournament that he’s won 6 times. Obviously, Novak is Novak. He’s the best player in the world right now. He only lost 6 matches this year. That means he’s unbelievable. I’m gonna put my best tennis. I’m gonna enjoy. The same way I’ve been doing these last few matches. I’m excited to face Novak.”
After struggling through what seemed like an uphill battle, World No. 215 Shintaro Mochizuki finally had his moment last Tuesday. In a touching scene, Mochizuki was spotted sobbing when he defeated Tomas Martin Etcheverry, who was ranked 31st, at the 2023 ATP Rakuten Open.
Mochizuki competed in a David vs. Goliath match against tennis star Etcheverry of Argentina, who was ranked 184 places higher than him, at Ariake Tennis Forest Park. Despite the odds, the Japanese player held his ground during the match, performing to the standards of his training and overcoming any apprehensions he may have had.
Mochizuki put on a masterful performance in the first set, winning it 6-4 in front of the home crowd. The second set, however, proved to be somewhat more challenging because Etcheverry was also unyielding. The two played a tie break, but ultimately it was Mochizuki who prevailed. After a two-hour battle, Mochizuki emerged victorious with scores of 6-4, 7-6(5).
Then, as he sat down, Mochizuki began to cry and covered his face with a towel as he came to terms with the fact that he had just won his first-ever ATP tour-level match and was thus one step closer to realizing his dream.
The Tennis Letter later shared this incident on X, where it has since received over 133.9k views.
The post read, “Shintaro Mochizuki is in tears as he wins his first ever tour-level match. Currently ranked #215. Just beat the world #31 in front of his home crowd.
A beautiful moment he’ll never forget.”

Just beat the world #31 in front of his home crowd.
The victory was not only a testament to Mochizuki’s remarkable talents but also a testament to the power of local support. With this victory, Mochizuki is now guaranteed a place in the Round of 16 of this tournament, where he will face another formidable foe on court, the tenth-ranked player in the world, Taylor Fritz.
Earlier this year, Mochizuki also won his maiden professional title at the Open Città della Disfida Challenger in Barletta, Italy, when he upset Santiago Rodriguez Taverna.
Fans are now supporting the 20-year-old Japanese player in the hopes that he will have a successful career ahead of him.
Carlos Alcaraz, the world’s second-ranked tennis player, appears to be in a downward spiral ever since he won the Wimbledon title with a stunning 1-6, 7-6 (6), 6-1, 3-6, 6-4, victory over Novak Djokovic. The Spaniard, who is only 20 years old, has not won a tournament in several months.
Then came his most catastrophic setback of all time: Alcaraz lost in the first round of the Paris Masters, much to the surprise of many fans.
Alcaraz vs. Safiullin
Alcaraz’s entry in the Paris Masters was highly anticipated, as it was supposed to be his resurgence following his withdrawal from the ATP Swiss Indoors Basel due to his left foot sole’s inflammation and gluteal muscle difficulties.
And, just a few days before the event, Alcaraz was also seen in an intense practice session with his arch-rival Djokovic, adding to the excitement and hope that the two would reprise their dramatic Wimbledon encounter.

But unfortunately, all that hype came to an end after Russian qualifier Roman Safiullin, a player who’s ranked 43 places lower than him, defeated the Spaniard 6-3,6-4.
An article from CNN wrote that the setback was difficult for him because he had high expectations for himself this time.
“It’s even more difficult, above all for me, to lose in the first rounds of a tournament that you expect to make the finals or where you expect a lot of yourself, it hurts. It hurts a lot,” Alcaraz said.
In addition, he also said that after his defeat, he needs to make many improvements in his game.
Via The Tennis Letter: “Right now I’m not in the right time to talk. Honestly after the loss, I have to take some time, you know, before thinking about the next days & what I have to do or what I’m gonna do.. But obviously before the ATP Finals begin, we have time. I just didn’t feel well on the court. A lot of things to improve, a lot of things to practice. I didn’t feel well in the game. I didn’t move well. In the shots, I think I had a good quality of shots. But, you know, physically in the part of movement, I have to improve a lot.”
Alcaraz congratulates opponent
Despite his defeat, Alcaraz greeted Safiullin in the center of the court, shook hands, and even had a conversation with him, during which he was spotted smiling.
In an X post, Alcaraz also congratulated his foe for winning the match, writing, “Congratulations on the victory Roman! 🤝🏻 I am saying goodbye to Paris much sooner than I wanted 🥲 Now it is time to prepare my game for the ATP Finals in Turin!”
