Gukesh Dommaraju, often known as Gukesh D, is a teenage Indian chess prodigy who made history by being the youngest player to win the men’s Candidates Tournament in Toronto, Canada. With this victory, the 17-year-old grandmaster will have a chance to overthrow China’s Ding Liren, the current world champion, at the 2024 World Chess Championship later this year.
The young player admitted after his victory: “I was completely emotional but after the game I’m feeling quite good.”
Will he be the youngest world champion?
The International Chess Federation (FIDE) has Gukesh ranked 16th in the world. He won the title with a clean draw against world number three, five-time US chess champion Hikaru Nakamura, who is more than twice his age. Gukesh will take on Ding, a 31-year-old Chinese superstar who won the 2023 World Championship. If the Indian youngster defeats Ding, who has previously suffered with weak plays, he will surpass Garry Kasparov’s record of being the youngest world champion at the age of 22.
“I don’t really care about [being] the youngest and all these records, but it’s a nice thing to say,” Gukesh declared.
He added: “I’m very excited to play in the world championship and really looking forward to all the preparations.”
After the renowned Indian player Viswanathan “Vishy” Anand, Gukesh is the second Indian to compete in a world championship. With his exceptional plays, Gukesh has now become the top-ranked player in India, surpassing five-time world champion Anand, who had been the nation’s best player for almost 40 years.
Youngster Gukesh Dommaraju defeated opponent Ding Liren with a performance score of 7.5-6.5 in their best-of-14 final in Singapore. With this victory, he became the youngest undefeated classical chess world champion ever.
Gukesh and Ding, the reigning champion, were tied as they went into the final game, and it looked like they would have to play chess tiebreaks. However, the 18-year-old athlete won the final point after Ding made a mistake.
With the unexpected turn of events, Ding was unable to do more than sit with his head in his hands in shock. Gukesh burst into tears as he realized his win. At 18, he is four years younger than the great Garry Kasparov was when the Russian became the world champion in 1985.
In a press conference, Gukesh admitted: “My journey, it’s been since the time I started playing chess at six-and-a-half, seven (years old). I’ve been dreaming about this moment for more than 10 years… Every chess player wants to experience this moment and very few get the chance. To be one of them – I think the only way to explain it is I am living my dream. I would like to thank God first of all. This whole journey starting from qualifying to the (qualifying tournament) Candidates, then coming here, it could only be possible by God. There were so many miracles.”
He added: “And I’m thankful for all the people who have been by my side on this journey. I would like to thank each and every one of them, but probably I will have to prepare my speech first because (with) the kind of emotions I’m feeling right now I’ll say something stupid.”
In a social media post, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Gukesh, stating: “Historic and exemplary! Congratulations to Gukesh D on his remarkable accomplishment. This is the result of his unparalleled talent, hard work and unwavering determination… His triumph has not only etched his name in the annals of chess history but has also inspired millions of young minds to dream big and pursue excellence. My best wishes for his future endeavours.”

Indian men’s badminton duo of Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy broke the record of London 2012 Olympic bronze medalist Saina Nehwal for most weeks as world No. 1 for an Indian Badminton Player. Nehwal held the previous record for being world no. 1 for nine consecutive weeks 3 days ago.
This most recent accomplishment surpasses Nehwal’s previous record of being number one for nine weeks in a row, a feat she accomplished in 2015 from August 18 to October 21.
Their outstanding results at major tournaments this year, including the China Open, Malaysia Open, and India Open, catapulted them to the top. Their winning run at the French Open was a real high point, confirming their position as the world’s top men’s doubles team.
Shetty and Rankireddy: Top of BWF Ranking
With an astounding 1,02,303 points on the BWF leaderboard, Rankireddy and Shetty have cemented their reputation as formidable players in men’s doubles badminton. This puts them more than 5,000 points ahead of their nearest rivals, the South Korean duo of Kang Min Hyuk and Seo Seung Jae.
Their journey, which they lovingly called “Sat-Chi,” culminated in October when they made history by becoming the first Indian doubles team to take the number one slot in the BWF Rankings.
This accomplishment was made possible by their outstanding performance at the Asian Games in Hangzhou. Although their first three-week reign at the top was short-lived, their steadfast dedication to perfection has now solidified them as the leading pair in the field of men’s doubles badminton.
The 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic is continuing his unrelenting ascent through the ranks, having achieved an unprecedented accomplishment by holding the top spot for 419 weeks. Djokovic continues to imprint his name more deeply into the history of the game, expanding his incredible record with every day that goes by.
But on Sunday, he will be adding yet another gem to his collection when, at 36 years and 321 days, he breaks Roger Federer’s record and becomes the oldest World No. 1 ever. In a sport where legends are made, Djokovic’s unwavering domination and unmatched longevity are proof of his excellence, enthralling spectators across the globe and cementing his status as one of tennis’s real titans.
The Decade-Defying Dominance of Djokovic
Seen as one of the best players in tennis history, Novak Djokovic demonstrated his extraordinary endurance and steady success as he approached his fourth decade of play. The Serbian legend turned thirty on May 22, 2017, and since then, he has won an astounding thirty-one tour-level titles, including ten ATP Masters 1000 wins from 40 matches, two ATP Finals championships from seven, and twelve Grand Slam victories out of a possible forty.
With every outstanding performance on the court, his legend is cemented as his undying commitment to greatness captivates viewers around the globe.
On July 4, 2011, at the tender age of 24, Novak Djokovic began his climb to the top of the men’s tennis rankings. This achievement came one day ahead of his fearsome rivals, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, who took the top spot at the age of 22.
Even with a new group of elite players on the ATP Tour, Djokovic’s unwavering skill has guaranteed his place at the top of the rankings. Though Carlos Alcaraz’s ascent to the top of the ATP Rankings at the age of 19 in September 2022 is impressive, Djokovic’s unmatched rule at the pinnacle of the game continues to loom large over the tennis scene.
During Game 2 of the Philadelphia 76ers versus New York Knicks matchup, NBA’s Last 2 Minutes report revealed critical missed calls. It highlighted 76ers coach Nick Nurse’s unsuccessful timeout attempts and confirmed Tyrese Maxey’s two fouls before his turnover, leading to Donte DiVincenzo’s game-winning 3-pointer.
As a result of these disclosures, spectators and commentators are left with plenty of food for thought and speculation during the game’s pivotal moments.
The Philadelphia 76ers, fuming at alleged unfairness in the officiating, first considered protesting losing 104-101 to the Knicks on Monday night, falling behind 2-0 in the series. But Tyrese Maxey, who was just named the league’s Most Improved Player on Tuesday’s TNT telecast, offered some context.
In a kind and open moment, Maxey steered the conversation away from dissatisfaction and toward resilience by reminding the team and supporters alike to keep cool and concentrate on the bigger picture.
Maxey denied the clean catch
“We are unable to think about it right now. Should we continue to focus on it, we will lose 0–3 in a few days. Not 0-3 down is what we desire. It is still possible for us to win this series. Not only for ourselves but for everyone else as well, we intend to show that.
“Let go of the past; it begins now. Be the more resilient team — not only physically, but emotionally as well — when the ball is put up on Thursday and tomorrow during practice.” Maxey quoted to usnews.
Before Jalen Brunson’s game-winning 3-pointer with just 27 seconds remaining, the Philadelphia 76ers had a tenuous five-point lead against the Dallas Mavericks in a thrilling matchup. The 76ers had to contend with a strong defense led by Josh Hart and Brunson when trying to inbound the ball to Maxey.
As Hart snatched the ball, Maxey struck the court, but the NBA’s review showed that Brunson’s jersey grab obstructed Maxey’s catch, and Hart’s contact caused Maxey to fall. The NBA analyzed this crucial sequence to show how narrow margins of victory decide NBA games.
