Former world champion Mike Tyson claims that his boxing match with YouTuber Jake Paul will just be an exhibition fight and not a formal competition. Tyson ended his professional career in 2005 and will turn 58 before facing Paul in Texas. Moreover, Paul had defeated Ryan Bourland in his 10th professional fight. 

Tyson said: “This is called an exhibition, but if you look up ‘exhibition’ you will not see any of the rules will be fighting under. This is a fight.” 

The competition won’t count toward their professional records if it is an exhibition, and it will stream live on Netflix. An estimated number of 80,000 may come to Arlington’s AT&T Stadium, home of the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys, for this will be the venue for the event.

Mike Tyson in Exhibition Fight

The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR), which authorizes boxing events in the state, stated that although the promoter had submitted a request to organize an event on that day, no fights or additional information had been provided. “Under TDLR rules, in an exhibition fight the combatants wear bigger gloves (16oz), have two-minute rounds and fight in fewer rounds than a sanctioned professional bout… In an exhibition, there is a referee but no judges and no winner is declared,” the TDLR stated.

In April 2020, Tyson and Roy Jones Jr. squared off in an exhibition match that resulted in a draw.

On the other hand, Paul defeated British boxer Tommy Fury in February 2023, but he has prevailed in nine of his ten boxing matches, most of which have been against former UFC competitors.

Tommy Fury predicts KO over Jake Paul

Tommy Fury is certain that he will defeat Jake Paul in his pay-per-view match as the date approaches. By February, “TNT” expects him to be eliminated by knockout. The 23-year-old Britt stated in a recent interview with iFL TV that he would finish off “The Problem Child” in only four rounds. Paul would definitely be exhausted by the second round of the eight-round fight, according to Fury.

“In my personal opinion, this fight will be over inside four rounds. It doesn’t go past four rounds. I believe he gasses after two and will not be able to live with the work rate I’ll set… I just believe I’m my skills and I believe that the shots will land especially with him. He’s not the most elusive guy in the world.”

Jake Paul’s Most Valuable Promotions recently claimed in a statement that the rumors about Paul’s historic fight against Mike Tyson on November 15 being staged or manipulated are “incorrect and baseless.” 

The company, which collaborated with Netflix on the most-streamed international athletic event in history, was firm that it adhered to all relevant rules for a match that was approved by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulations (TDLR).

“Both fighters in good faith performed to the best of their abilities with the goal of winning the fight,” MVP’s statement said. “There were absolutely no restrictions – contractual or otherwise – around either fighter. Each boxer was able to use his full arsenal to win the fight. Any agreement to the contrary would violate TDLR boxing rules,” the company stated. 

Paul himself somehow added fuel to the fire in the post-match press conference by stating: “I wanted to give the fans a show, but I didn’t want to hurt someone that didn’t need to be hurt.”

However, MVP called it “illogical and inane” to suggest that the company would jeopardize a new and possibly profitable collaboration with Netflix by violating the rules. 

MVP added: “Trash talk and speculation are common in sports, and athletes and promoters need to tolerate nonsensical commentary, jokes and opinions. But suggesting anything other than full effort from these fighters is not only naive but an insult to the work they put into their craft and to the sport itself.” 

Record-breaking match 

With approximately 72,300 spectators, the event set a record for boxing and mixed martial arts events outside of Las Vegas on November 15 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, bringing in a total revenue of $18,117,072. Furthermore, the match reached a record-breaking 65 million concurrent streams on Netflix.

The match resulted in Paul (11-1, 7 KOs) defeating former heavyweight champion Tyson (50-7, 44 KOs) via unanimous decision. The former YouTube celebrity prevailed with a record of 78-18 in eight two-minute rounds, with the judges scoring it 80-72, 79-73, and 79-73.

The boxing match between Mike Tyson and Jake Paul at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, brought in a record $18.1 million in gate revenue, the highest for any boxing or mixed martial arts events outside of Las Vegas.

According to Most Valuable Promotions, the fight broke a record for the highest-grossing gate income for a combat sports event at the football stadium, home to the Dallas Cowboys, and earned the ninth-highest gate revenue in US history. The promoters also reported that the average ticket price for Paul-Tyson and Amanda Serrano-Katie Taylor matches was $304, and the Paul-Tyson fight was attended by more than 72,300 fans. 

The previous Texas gate record for a combat sport or mixed martial arts event was $9 million, which was established at AT&T Stadium in 2021 when Canelo Alvarez defeated Billy Joe Saunders. 

Nakisa Bidarian, the co-founder of Most Valuable Promotions, said: “Paul vs Tyson and Taylor vs Serrano 2 rewrote the record books, solidifying Most Valuable Promotions as a trailblazer in combat sports… From setting the highest gate outside of Las Vegas in U.S. history for a combat sports event to becoming the most streamed sporting event in U.S. history, this event is a testament to the global impact of Jake Paul, Mike Tyson, Katie Taylor, Amanda Serrano and the incredible athletes on this card.”

Netflix shared that 60 million households watched the fight, which Paul won by a unanimous decision after eight rounds. At its peak, there were 65 million concurrent streams. The Serrano-Taylor bout, which Taylor won in ten rounds, was watched by about 50 million households.
