Todd Boehly, the American co-owner of Chelsea has shared his thoughts on the club recently during an event and some of it has ruffled the feathers of others. He recommended that the Premier League adopt an American sports style all-star campaign.
He added that instead of three teams being relegated at the end of a season, a four team tournament would be a better bet to see who is truly eligible for the trophy. This is one of his recommendations for the English football clubs to help raise more money.
An American telling the British what to do to make extra money, this has been a common occurrence for the last 100 years. He further said that American sports can teach the Premier League a lot of lessons.
He then stated ‘I hope the Premier League takes a little bit of a lesson from American sports and really starts to figure out, “Why wouldn’t we do a tournament with the bottom four teams? Why isn’t there an All-Star game?”
‘You could do a North vs South All-Star game in the Premier League and fund whatever the pyramid needed very easily. Everyone likes the idea of more revenue for the League.’
In this proposed Premier all-star League, the greatest players in each of the teams such as Manchester United, City, Liverpool would compete against the rest of the London clubs. Following that, he mentioned Tuchel’s firing reason, it was due to his disagreements with the new club owners’ vision for Chelsea.
‘When you take over any business, you have to make sure you are aligned with the people in the business, and Tuchel is obviously extremely talented and obviously someone who had great success with Chelsea.’
‘Tuchel is obviously extremely talented and someone who had great success with Chelsea.
‘Our vision for the club was to find a manager who really wanted to collaborate with us. The reality was that we weren’t sure that Thomas saw it the same way we saw it.
‘We just didn’t have a shared vision for the future. It wasn’t a decision that was made because of a single win or loss,’ stated Boehly.
Liverpool manager, Jurgen Klopp dismissed such ideas that were proposed by Boehly.
Klopp then stated, “He doesn’t wait long.” “Great. When he finds a date for that, he can call me. He forgets that in the big sports in America, these players have four-month breaks.
“It is completely different in football. What can I say? Does he want to bring the Harlem Globetrotters as well and let them play against a football team?
“I am surprised by the question so please don’t judge my answer too much. But maybe he can explain it to me at some point and find a proper date.
“Not sure people want to see that. Imagine that: [Manchester] United players, Liverpool players, Everton players altogether in one team. It is not a national team. North against south. That means north east [too], Newcastle… interesting game. And all the London guys together, Arsenal, Tottenham, great. Did he really say it? Interesting.”
