America’s Courtney Frerichs suffered an ACL tear which shattered her 2024 Paris Olympic dreams.
Recently, another American runner, Emma Coburn, fractured her ankle while attempting to improve her water jump technique, which also ended her season. Due to this tragic failure, Coburn will also not be representing the United States in the Olympics.
In an Instagram post, the athlete shared the devastating news to her fans. She said that, like Coburn, she had the injury when she overextended her knee during a water jump. It was reported that she sustained several injuries, including substantial tears in both the medial and lateral menisci, in addition to her ACL being torn.
“Sometimes this sport will just break your heart over and over again 💔 Wednesday I had surgery to reconstruct my ACL and repair a torn meniscus in my right knee,” she said.

The athlete added: “Last month, two days before what was supposed to be my first race of the outdoor season, we were practicing water jumps when my knee hyperextended in the water pit resulting in a complete tear of my ACL and tears in both my medial and lateral menisci.”
Despite her unfortunate circumstances, Frerichs is still hoping to come back as a ‘healthier and stronger version’ of herself.
“I am absolutely heartbroken to be missing this season- especially it being an Olympic year, but I keep reminding myself that a single season doesn’t define me or my running career,” Frerichs declared.
