Things are not looking well for the Memphis Grizzlies this season. With a dismal record of 3-12, they have sank to the bottom of the Western Conference standings next to the San Antonio Spurs.
And no one has been more dispirited about the outcomes than the players themselves. Asked why the team has been performing less than usual, Derrick Rose pinpoints that they lack communication.
Derrick: Communication is huge in this league
After the Grizzlies’ latest loss to the Phoenix Suns, 110-89, Rose was asked on the postgame press conference what the team ‘could have done differently’ to get them back on the game.
“Just communicating. Been saying that the whole time. I don’t know when it’s gonna actually resonate, but if we’re not gonna talk on the defensive end, there’s no way in hell we’re gonna win these games. That’s just honestly speaking,” the veteran point guard said. “Communication is huge in this league, especially on this level.”
He also said that sometimes it’s “scary” to hear the other team calling the same play they’re running. It reminds them that while they were on the field, they were all working towards the same goal.
“Right now we lack that, but it’s something that we can work on and an area we can actually improve in,” he added.
This issue is further compounded by the fact that six rotation players for the Grizzlies are also injured. Ja Morant, who’s currently serving his 25-game suspension, is also away.
Grizzlies vs. Suns
Santi Aldama led the Grizzlies with 21 points and 5 rebounds in 36 minutes. Rose, on the other hand, put up 17 points, 2 rebounds, 1 assist, and 1 steal in 22 minutes of play. David Roddy also added 14 points.
This was the third loss in a row for the team and the seventh time they have lost at home, going 0-7.
So far, the Grizzlies have only won against the Portland Trail Blazers (112-100), Los Angeles Clippers (105-101), and San Antonio Spurs (120-108).
They are set to face the Minnesota Timberwolves in their next game.
