Green

Following Golden State’s 120-109 win over the Detroit Pistons, Warriors forward Draymond Green took the floor to answer questions at a post-match conference. And throughout the course of the interview, Green made a number of comments; however, his most noteworthy line came at a very unexpected moment.

At one point, one reporter had asked, “You’ve obviously played with one of the greatest point guards of all time, Steph Curry…”, to which Green immediately cut in to correct him and said, “One of? Or ‘The Greatest’ point guard of all time, I’ll take that one,” emphasizing that Curry owns the title.

Curry sparks PG debate

The title of ‘the greatest point guard of all time’ has been a source of contention in the off-season, starting from the moment Steph Curry declared in a Gil Arenas podcast episode that he was the greatest PG of all time.

“Are you the best point guard ever?” former Warriors guard Gilbert Arenas asked.

After giving it some thought, Curry said, “Yes.” “It’s [between] me and Magic [Johnson], that’s the conversation?”

Without a doubt, both players are a force to be reckoned with once they step onto the court. But with so many metrics in play to determine which of the two deserves the crown, some fans are split on their decision.

Who’s to say who’s the greatest? By what standard do we hold them to?

Is it their overall stats? The number of championships they have? How many games they’ve led to victory? The number of MVP titles?

Does the era in which they play count? There are simply too many factors to consider.

Thus, the debate becomes tough to crack and may not end anytime soon.

Curry said it best in Gil Arena’s podcast: “That’s why we have the conversation — because it’s fun measuring eras against each other. I love it. That’s what basketball and sports is all about. That’s why people watch.”

Michael Jordan’s stance

Michael Jordan later weighed in on the Curry vs. Johnson debate via a text he sent to ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith:

“Steph Curry is by far the best shooter of all time. Yes, his movement has created many shots for his teammates, he’s a career 45-percent 3-point shooter, but Magic Johnson invented the triple-double. Not true invented, but makes it more noticeable in terms of the impact on the game. It’s a point guard stat, to be honest. Magic was the best. … By the way, Magic has five NBA championships.”
