For one-day internationals, India’s promising batsman Shubman Gill is still available to bat in the middle order. The right-handed batsman noted that batting at the first drop was another factor in his first ODI hundred this year.
Since making his ODI debut against New Zealand in Hamilton in 2019, Gill has participated in 12 games. The 23-year-old has opened on eight of those occasions and batted in three of the other four.
The youthful phenom told ESPN Cricinfo that he has confidence in his ability to play against spinners. If the club management asks him to play a middle-order role, he acknowledged that he is prepared to do so.
Shubman Gill’s statement
Gill stated: “I have a strong all-around game and rotate the strike against spinners. Therefore, I am prepared even if I have a chance in the middle of the order. I’m prepared for anything if the team management is watching me in the centre of the lineup. I wasn’t opening when I hit that hundred in Zimbabwe because I was batting at a deficit of one. So whether the team needs me with one down or two down, I am prepared.”
The batsman, who was born in Punjab, averages a respectable 57.90 and recently hit a century in an ODI against Zimbabwe in Harare. With 15 fours and a six, he hit 130 from 97 balls.
When you perform well in red-ball cricket, Shubman Gill said, “You acquire a certain type of confidence.”
The young man said that red-ball cricket continues to be his top objective and that he is aware of the need of maintaining his focus when in a flow. He stated:
“I place a lot of importance on the red-ball format. When you perform well in red-ball cricket, your confidence changes. Anywhere there is an opening in the side, I’m prepared to bat. My approach doesn’t seem to be flawed in any way.”
The right-handed batsman most recently played for Glamorgan, when he amassed 244 runs—including a century and two fifty-run innings—in three games.
