Glenn Maxwell, an injured Australian player who will be out for up to three months, has detailed exactly how he shattered his leg two weeks ago.
Due to the injury, the spinning all-rounder, who had been expecting to rejoin the Australian Test team for the next tour of India, has all but given up on that goal.
When the strange episode occurred, Maxwell was in Melbourne attending a friend’s 50th birthday.
Glenn Maxwell’s statement
They didn’t actually have a grassy backyard since they had fake grass, so it was really a small, little area just around the corner. “I almost pretended to chase (my friend) off somewhere,” stated by Maxwell.
“I estimate that we each took three or four steps out there before both slipping at the same moment. He, unfortunately, dropped at a terrible angle and landed directly on my leg, breaking it as soon as my foot became a tiny bit stuck.
“It was quite painful, and I experienced every aspect of it. I was yelling a little bit, and he kept saying, ‘Please tell me you’re joking, please tell me you’re joking,’ but then I just reached this ultimate serenity of astonishment, saying, ‘I just shattered my leg, and I’m pretty sure both bones are broken. I don’t think I should move. Can you get my wife?’
“The first crack I heard was when I broke my fibula, which was broken through the bone in addition to being split in half. I believe there was a small chip off the tibia as well, but I tore every ligament on the top of my foot in the space between them both,” said Maxwell.
While Maxwell waited for an ambulance while lying on the ground in the rain, his pals constructed a gazebo to protect him from the elements.
Eventually, he was given the go-ahead by the physicians to be driven to the hospital by his wife rather than by himself, and his friends then put him in a vehicle.
About 24 hours passed while he was in a hospital bed before he underwent surgery.
It was a terrible couple of days because, according to him, he “probably” didn’t sleep for two days while he was in pain.
