Sarfaraz Khan has lately made headlines for two distinct reasons, namely the fact that he was passed over for the India Test team and the ludicrous number of runs he scored for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy.
Milind Rege, a former captain of Mumbai, believes Sarfaraz Khan’s role should be to perform and score runs rather than expose his frustrations in front of the people.
Despite scoring a staggering 2441 runs in total over the previous three Ranji seasons, the youthful batsman has not been selected for India’s red-ball squad. Fans of cricket and former players expressed outrage when his name was recently excluded from India’s four-test series against Australia.
Sarfaraz spoke out frequently about his treatment of India. The 25-year-old said that he was disappointed that he had not yet received a call-up from India. He also talked about his interaction with BCCI chief selector Chetan Sharma, who had promised to choose Sarfaraz for the Bangladesh tour last year.
It can be devastating to be denied an India cap after scoring 928 runs in the 2019–20 season, 982 more the season after, and another 556 runs in six games.
Remarks about Sarfaraz’s statement
“Continue to perform, but making absurd remarks won’t improve things.” Sarfaraz ought to stop criticizing his choice of India. His responsibility is to record runs. “Rege, he must focus on his batting,” said Mumbai’s chief selector to Midday.
Rege is aware of the fierce rivalry among the members of the Indian team, notwithstanding Sarfaraz’s tragic circumstances. Rege also thinks that Sarfaraz doesn’t have a place to slot in yet because there could be three or four players competing for a single position.
Due to the presence of wicketkeeper Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli, and maybe all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja in India’s middle order, Sarfaraz will have to wait for his turn.
“There is no denying Sarfaraz’s outstanding performance.” However, there must be a spot in the [Indian Test team’s] batting order. His physique is unmatched and incredible. I believe he will have his opportunity wherever there is one. But where is the location right now?” He added.
Due to the middle-order core of Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman, and Sourav Ganguly, Mumbai’s batting coach Muzumdar, one of the best batters of his generation, never had the chance to wear the India cap. Despite the passing of time, he is still held in high regard as the player who deserves it the most and who has never played for India.
