In a shockingly open revelation regarding his impending retirement, Steve Smith states that he is unsure of whether he will play another Test match in Australia.
The legendary Australian batsman defeated a woeful South Africa alongside Usman Khawaja on thursday at the SCG, surpassing Don Bradman with his 30th Test century.
While Smith will go with his team for the tour of India beginning next month and for the Ashes beginning in England in June, he is not considering traveling further.
When the 33-year-old Smith was asked if he will remain in Australia for upcoming cricket summers, the 36-year-old Khawaja had just praised the 33-year-old Khawaja’s potential longevity.
Smith’s remarks
“I’m not sure. We shall see,” remarked Smith. “At the moment, I’m having fun. How long I’ll play is something I truly can’t predict. I’m uncertain.
“Try to do one tour at a time. Simply have fun with it, the practice, and the desire to improve. I’m having a good time playing while I’m doing it. However, I’m unsure of its expected duration.”
Smith has already spoken about the possibility of leaving the sport earlier than most people would anticipate. He said to The Daily Telegraph in November, & No, I don’t have a plan, but I’m 33 now.
For the past 13 years, I’ve participated in international cricket. It has passed a while. Although I still find enjoyment in it, I am unquestionable nearer the finish than the beginning. Additionally, after having elbow surgery in 2019, he briefly pondered giving up.
On Thursday, Smith passed Michael Clarke to move up to fourth place on Australia’s all-time record for runs scored with 8647 runs from 92 Test matches. Smith said, I don’t really worry about that stuff, but I did look up at the board shortly after I scored a 100, and to sit third on the list of all-time Australians, there are some pretty big names there, so that’s pretty exciting.
Fourth in the list of run-scorers (as well) … It was exciting to see my name alongside those famous players even though I don’t play for that sort of thing. The event was quite unique.
