In the world of sports, fans will always have something to say. The recent proposed rule change in the field of athletics had resulted in disagreement with the fans, and it undoubtedly caused a rift in the athletics community.
The World’s Athletics have decided to eliminate the “take-off zone”, which caused track and field stars to voice out their opinions about this rule change. Carl Lewis, known to be a nine-time Olympic gold medalist, also disagreed with the revisions, calling it offensive, especially with regard to the requirements of the athletes.
Protest from gold medalists
Moreover, fourth-time Olympic gold medalist Michael Johnson has taken his opinions on social media X, stating that the problem is a ‘lack of agreement/understanding of the problem.’
“Very difficult to solve a problem if there’s no agreement on the actual problem and why a solve is needed. All the focus is on solutions for an undefined problem. Chaos ensues. Problem unsolved,” Johnson added in his post.
The World Athletics explained that the goal behind these modifications is to bring the sport up to date, and elevate its status among sports fans. Eliminating the take-off zone under the new rules will result in fewer disqualifications and foul plays during competitions. In replacement, a ‘jump zone’ will be set to legalize all jumps, and its measurements will be proposed accordingly.
