Christian viewers throughout the world have taken to social media in protest following the opening ceremony of the 2024 Olympic Games. A significant sponsor has withdrawn its sponsorship due to the seriousness of the dispute. Olympic advertisements have been removed, as confirmed by a statement on X from C Spire, a technology and telecommunications business based in Mississippi.

C Spire’s unexpected step highlights the general dissatisfaction among Christian viewers. The company’s decision to withdraw from the tournament serves as a stark reminder of the enormous influence that public opinion has on corporate sponsorship in the competitive world of international sports.

C Spire stated; “We were horrified to see the Last Supper mocked at the Paris Olympics opening festivities. We at C Spire have decided to discontinue our Olympic advertising.”

Performers and drag queens recreate “The Last Supper”

Drag queens and other performers enacted a scenario that reminded viewers of Leonardo da Vinci’s famous artwork, “The Last Supper” . A new, modern twist was introduced by the actors’ colourful and exuberant portrayal of the scene.

The scene struck a deep chord with some of the viewers by fusing historical art with contemporary performance, demonstrating the enduring relevance of da Vinci’s work while also embracing the inclusion and exuberance of drag culture.

However, the scene offended others.

Republican Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves stated; “The private industry in Mississippi is making a strong push, and I applaud that. There is no laughing at God. A sensible, suitable line was drawn by C Spire.”

X was also used by social media users to express their anger.

One said; “Around 2 billion Christians live across the globe, and many of them like watching the sports. Why would you be so frank and mocking about that?”
