The New York Yankees $280 million roster not playing like champs this season has raised questions about the club management.

Despite the Yankees’ success in 2022, this year has been rife with unforeseen difficulties. Isiah Kiner-Falefa was unexpectedly thrust into the spotlight by the infield controversy, and Carlos Rodon and Frankie Montas’ injuries exposed the team’s pitching weaknesses and called into question general manager Brian Cashman’s judgment. For loyal fans, it has been a season full of unexpected turns.

The New York Yankees suffered a setback on June 3 when Aaron Judge, known for his record-breaking MLB home runs, fractured his toe while playing outfield. The Yankees’ general manager, Brian Cashman, came under fire after a minor injury revealed a ruptured ligament in Judge’s foot.

The team’s decline to last place in their division was accelerated by Giancarlo Stanton and Anthony Rizzo’s underwhelming play. In a recent article for the New York Post, MLB analyst Joel Sherman highlighted the Yankees’ problems.

Joel Sherman wrote, “The Astros have beaten the Yankees in the ALCS 3 times since 2017. Have the Yankees learned the right lessons from those eliminations?” an article from sportskeeda.com mentioned.

The focus is on Cashman’s lack of trade activity, prompting comparisons with the Astros. The Yankees, once giants, have declined while the Astros continue to excel. Despite a $280 million payroll, second only to the Mets, the Yankees batted just .230 as a club, ranking 29th out of 30 teams. Global superstars grace the Yankees roster, but the club still flounders, escalating calls for Cashman to take action.

The Yankees are in such an unexpected plight after starting the season as American League East defending champions. Aaron Judge set an American League record for most home runs in a season with 62 home runs in 2022. His injury keeping him out of action for several games hurt the team. The Yankees still had their moments. Starting pitcher Domingo German put his name in the record books by pitching the 24th perfect game in Major League Baseball history when the Yankees defeated the Oakland Athletics at Oakland, California, on June 28.

Although in the doldrums now, there is still hope.  The Yankees are currently just 10 games out of first place in the very competitive AL East. The competition isn’t over yet.
