Russian weightlifter Tatiana Kashirina has received a retroactive ban and has been stripped of her world titles after being caught up in doping allegations.
After working so hard and etching her mark in weightlifting history, Kashirina has fallen from grace for violating anti-doping rules. She was given a retroactive ban from April 2013 to June 2017, effectively stripping her of all her achievements during that time period.
Three world championships, three European championships, and several other titles were washed away, and all her hard work ended up in vain.
The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) verified her disqualifications to insidethegames, in which they released the following statement:
“All the competitive results obtained by Tatiana Kashirina from 1 April 2013 until 19 June 2017 were disqualified, with all the resulting consequences, including the forfeiture of any titles, awards, medals, points and prize and appearance money,”
In addition to this, the CAS also imposed an eight-year ban on Kashirina.
The history made by Kashirina
Kashirina had already received a two-year suspension at a very young age, which was rare for someone who was still in the budding stage of their career. She was only 15 when she first failed a drug test. This incident occurred in 2006.
14 years later, in December 2020, Kashirina again found herself at the center of a doping scandal, this time based on data from a Moscow lab database of test results dating back to 2012–15. The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) subsequently suspended her, which led to her exclusion from the Olympic Games in Tokyo.
However, this punishment proved to be short-lived, as the suspension was lifted just eight months after it began.
CAS overturns ruling
But, on August 28th, the CAS overturned that ruling and consequently issued sanctions against Kashirina, resulting in the forfeiture of all her titles and an 8-year ban from the sport, which ends by the time she’s 40.
According to Match TV, Kashirina stated that she does not have the financial resources to contest the sanctions.
“Everyone calls and wants to know how I took this decision.” Imagine a person who lives with this all his life. You were punished unreasonably and try to prove that you are not a camel. You’ve been living this for 22 years, and then this happens. The courts won, there was an evidentiary form. I won’t say big words, I don’t have large sums to challenge this decision, I’ve already spent enough on the courts. “I have nothing more to say,” Kashirina said in a statement.
