At the recent Houston Open, world number one Scottie Scheffler, who is vying for a third straight US PGA Tour title, recovered from a late double-bogey with back-to-back birdies to join a five-way tie for the lead. He had a double bogey on his card for the second day in a row, but his four-under-par 66 was good enough to tie David Skinns of England, Stephan Jaeger of Germany, Alejandro Tosti of Argentina, and Belgian Thomas Detry at the top of the leaderboard at nine-under 201.
With this, Skinns had five birdies in his bogey-free 65, Jaeger had six birdies and two bogeys in his four-under 66, Tosti shook off an early double-bogey with five birdies in a two-under 68 and Detry had four birdies and a bogey in his three-under 67.
Scheffler’s performance
After making six birdies and one bogey in his first 12 holes, Scheffler was disappointed to finish his second round with a double-bogey at 18 the day before, but surged to the top of the scoreboard at 10-under. When making a bogey at hole 13, he was tied for the lead. During the duration of his performance, the course’s worst hole, the short par-three 15th, proved him unforgiving. Six feet or so from the hole, Scheffler’s tee ball found the green, but it spun off the putting surface and into the water.
He eventually bounced back, hitting the green in two to make a birdie at the par-five 16th and sinking a four-and-a-half-foot birdie putt at the 17th.
Scheffler stated: “(I) feel like I did a lot of stuff really well out there today.. Feel like I played better than my score.”
“Overall it was nice to finish with those two birdies. Hit a really good shot into 16, good shot into 17 — yeah, felt like I did a lot of things well today,” he added.
