Sergio Garcia of LIV Golf plans to return to the DP World Tour for the 2025 season in an attempt to compete in the Ryder Cup next year.
The 44-year-old athlete hopes to tie the European record of 11 appearances set by Sir Nick Faldo and Lee Westwood in the biennial event. However, Garcia must pay the tour’s costly penalties which are estimated to be more than £1 million for his previous defection to play LIV events. He must also serve a suspension in order to achieve his goal.
A representative for the DP World Tour, based in Europe, verified that Garcia applied to rejoin the organization before the deadline. The spokesperson said: “He has paid his fines but will have to serve his suspensions before he can play on the DP World Tour.”
European golfers who wish to be selected for the Ryder Cup must be part of the tour. The 2025 Ryder Cup tournament will be from September 26-28 at Bethpage in New York.
Garcia has won 11 PGA Tour titles and 16 European Tour titles– his 2017 Masters title counted in both totals. In May 2023, Garcia resigned from the European circuit when an arbitration panel ruled in favour of the DP World Tour, confirming its authority to impose fines and ban players who participated in LIV Golf events without authorization.
