In their United Cup Group F opening match, Katie Boulter and Charles Broom defeated Argentina and gained victory for Great Britain.
After Boulter defeated Nadia Podoroska 6-2, 6-3, Great Britain took a 1-0 lead. However, Argentina made a comeback when Tomas Martin Etcheverry defeated Billy Harris 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.despite his stomach ailment.
Nevertheless, Great Britain prevailed in the end when Broom and British number one Boulter defeated Maria Lourdes Carle and Etcheverry 7-6 (7-4), 7-5 in their mixed doubles match.
Boulter said: “I love playing doubles. I feel like I can relax and play my game and enjoy it even more than the singles… But obviously I’m very happy to get through my first singles win. It’s never easy at the start of a season.”
Great Britain will now battle against Australia in their next Group F match on January 1. In the mixed doubles event, Boulter may have a match with her fiancé Alex de Minaur.
Boulter acknowledged that it will be a challenge to face De Minaur in a decisive match. She remarked: “Let’s hope we don’t reach [the doubles] and we win before.”
The United Cup started in 2023 and the United States won the inaugural competition. In 2024, Germany took home the title.
