Tennis legends Andy Murray and Jamie Murray may soon receive the honour of having their own road signs.
It is one of several ideas to commemorate their accomplishments in the field of sports and to draw more tourists to Dunblane. The brothers’ names are primarily intended to be displayed on a new welcome sign at the entrance of their hometown.
Paul Nelson, chair of the Dunblane town centre group, was recently asked by the Dunblane Development Trust to look at ways they could commemorate and celebrate the achievements of the siblings. Paul disclosed that the proposed sign would say: “Welcome to the Cathedral City of Dunblane, home of the tennis greats Andy and Jamie Murray.”
Paul added: “The sign is one of many suggestions to commemorate the achievements of Andy and Jamie. It is not the only thing we would want to do.”
There could also be a tourism trail through Dunblane that includes a mural of Sir Andy outside the Dunblane Tennis Club, where his career began, and his gold post box. Additionally, a display of Andy’s memorabilia at a nearby museum may be included in the route.
Moreover, a statue honouring the two brothers is also part of the plan, although it would require significant fundraising.
One Dunblane local said about the road signs: “We want people coming into the town to know that this is where the Murray brothers grew up and where they honed their talents. It is only right that Andy and Jamie’s names are on the sign that greets both visitors to the town.”
