Before the game, Suresh Raina, a former captain of both India and the Chennai Super Kings, gave his predictions for the players who will perform well.
The 16th season of the Indian Premier League, now the biggest and wealthiest franchise T20 league in the world, will get underway with the IPL 2023 mini-auction on Friday. This year’s auction is not a huge one like the past.
The majority of the big names are already gone and settled with their respective clubs, so teams won’t start from zero, but that doesn’t mean the anticipation for this year’s auction is any less. After losing Kane Williamson, several clubs, like Surnrisers Hyderabad, are in need of a captain.
Teams like the Mumbai Indians are looking for a successor for Kieron Pollard, while others, like the Chennai Super Kings, are looking for a true all-rounder in the wake of Dwayne Bravo’s retirement.
Punjab Kings also have the second-largest salary after SRH. Not to mention Lucknow Super Giant, who released a number of players like Manish Pandey and Jason Holder despite performing well in their debut season.
Suresh Raina, a former captain of India and the Chennai Super Kings, gave his predictions for the players who will do well before of the event. Raina chose Jaydev Unadkat and N Jagadeesan from among the Indian players, both of whom have had a strong domestic campaign.
Suresh Raina’s remarks
While Jagadeesan amassed five straight hundreds for Tamil Nadu, the latest of which was a record-breaking 277 against Arunachal Pradesh, Unadkat concluded with 19 wickets in 10 games at an economy rate of 3.33.
“N Jagadeesan is a very intelligent, calculated batsman who bats really deep and has a great cricketing intellect. He has done a great job for Tamil Nadu; be on the lookout for him on Jio Cinema,” he remarked.
As a result of his impressive performance in the T20 World Cup, when he grabbed 11 wickets in seven games, Raina singled out Irish fast bowler Joshua Little as a player to watch out for.
“Ben Stokes has led England brilliantly, and Sam Curran has performed admirably for both England and Chennai Super Kings. Therefore, having a top all-around player on your squad might alter how the game unfolds.”
“Then there is Jaydev Unadkat, who just took home the Vijay Hazare Trophy and has extensive IPL experience. Joshua Little from Ireland should be avoided. I recently played with him, and he’s been doing extremely well in the World Cup right now,” he stated.
Some of the world’s top cricketers such as Stokes, will be among 405 players to go under the hammer at an auction on Friday for next year’s money-spinning Indian Premier League.
AFP looks at five stars who could get a fat pay cheque when the 10 franchises bid in Kochi ahead of the Twenty20 tournament due to start in late March.
Ben Stokes (England)
The big-hitting left-hand batsman and dangerous right-arm seam bowler last played the IPL in 2021, when he left midway due to injury, and opted out of this year’s edition.
Stokes, 31, played a key part in England’s T20 World Cup triumph in November and this month led the Test side to a famous series victory in Pakistan.
He set an IPL record in 2018 when Rajasthan Royals bought him for $1.96 million in the auction and is currently listed in the highest base-price bracket at $246,000.
Sam Curran (England)
The all-rounder was Player of the Tournament in the T20 World Cup after his skills as a “death bowler” closing down opposition batsmen in the final overs turned him into a potent weapon for England.
The left-arm quick and attacking middle-order batsman had a successful stint with Chennai Super Kings but parted ways after a back injury and missed the 2022 edition.
Curran has a strike rate of nearly 150 and is placed, like Stokes, in the top band of the auction list, so Chennai and their warhorse captain MS Dhoni may want him back as they hunt for a fifth title.
Cameron Green (Australia)
Six-foot-six (1.98 metres) tall with a demon outswing, Green was initially picked as a fast bowler for Western Australia but has emerged as a fearsome batsman too.
The Perth Scorchers star, 23, made a big impression in India with his attacking batting on tour in September, when he struck 118 runs at a strike rate of 214.54 as an opener.
Compatriot David Warner warned Green that playing his maiden IPL on top of a busy 2023 that will include a tour of India, an Ashes and a World Cup, could be too much.
“It’s going to be a really tough year. I don’t think anyone is disagreeing with that. But it’s a really good opportunity, I think,” Green said.
Nicholas Pooran (West Indies)
West Indies stars have long thrived at the IPL and left-handed batsman Pooran has played in leagues around the world, from Australia’s Big Bash to the Abu Dhabi T10.
The wicketkeeper-batsman stepped down as West Indies’ white-ball skipper after the team’s T20 World Cup debacle and was also released by IPL side Sunrisers Hyderabad last month.
But with a T20 strike rate of over 141, Pooran is listed in the top bracket of players, including fellow West Indian Jason Holder, in the auction.
Rilee Rossouw (South Africa)
The left-hand batsman has been an impact player for South Africa, with his blazing T20 form including two centuries in October.
The 33-year-old demolished the Indian attack to give the Proteas a consolation win in Indore and blasted 109 to crush Bangladesh in a T20 World Cup group match.
He has been in demand in the T20 franchise circuit, but could never get going in the IPL in 2014 and 2015 before returning unsold ahead of this year’s season.
The Irish teenager, Josh Little, made a significant admission about his decision to leave Chennai Super Kings in the 2022 Indian Premier League after just two weeks.
In the 2022 Indian Premier League, the Chennai Super Kings had a hit-and-miss season and came in ninth place, which was disappointing. The team’s iconic wicketkeeper-batsman, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, gave captaincy of the team to Ravindra Jadeja prior to the start of the season.
However, Dhoni took over when Jadeja resigned from the position in the middle of the campaign. That controversy, it turns out, was not the only one from CSK’s season.
Josh, the 23-year-old star from Ireland, has recently admitted that he departed the team just two weeks after joining them. It appears that this was because he was being used as a “net bowler” to fill in for other bowlers when they became “weary.”
Josh’s remarks
“I was told that it was something that it wasn’t,” he claimed. ‘I’m a net bowler, so there’s a chance I’ll play if someone gets hurt, I was informed before leaving. However, I was unable to bowl when I wanted. When I only had two overs during a training session, I would exclaim, ‘Two overs, I’m halfway around the world here!’
Josh then stated, “My playing in the Lankan Premier League and T10, together with the fact that I had a successful year behind me, may have made me foolish.”
“Since I play cricket for my country, it didn’t feel appropriate. The other males were eager to participate because they had never received that kind of exposure. I was like “get me out of here” when I learned I was a net bowler who had to bowl at someone when the slingers were worn out, which is probably why they won’t ever hire me again because I left after two weeks,” he expressed.
However, the Irish teenager will be offered at the Indian Premier League auction on December 23. Little, who has 62 wickets in 53 T20Is to date and has played for Dambulla Giants in the Lankan Premier League, has the support of former Chennai Super Kings player Suresh Raina, who has also endorsed Little as one of the auction’s top prospects. Also a member of The Hundred, Little represented Manchester Originals there.
TATA IPL 2022 is the 15th edition of the Indian domestic cricket league with the t20 format game. This is going to be the most exciting and thrilling season as it features 2 new additions.
