Defenseman Kristian Rubins made hockey history for Latvia by scoring his second goal just 1:22 into the overtime period of a thrilling game against the United States. This momentous 4-3 victory gave Latvia a well-earned bronze medal at the ice hockey world championship.
Canada, who won their 28th world championship and cemented their position as the sport’s undisputed leaders, soared to a spectacular 5-2 victory over Germany in the final. This outstanding accomplishment, which beats Latvia’s previous record of seventh place achieved on three occasions, is the country’s first-ever top-three finish at the competition.
The US suffered a bitter repeat in the bronze medal game, losing to Latvia 4-3 in overtime. Latvia’s Rubins fueled a late comeback, equalizing the score at 3-3 with 5:39 left in regulation. Despite Grimaldi’s two goals for the US, including one that put them ahead 3-2, they couldn’t secure a medal.
Heartbreak struck the US for the second consecutive year as they fell short in the bronze medal game. Their dominance was evident with eight straight victories in the tournament until a devastating 4-3 overtime loss to Germany in the semifinals. However, Latvia’s resilience shone through as Kristian Rubins ignited a late rally, scoring his first goal with just 5:39 remaining in the final period to level the score at 3-3 and force overtime.
Joining the comeback effort, Roberts Bukarts and Janis Jaks also found the back of the net for Latvia. Despite Rocco Grimaldi’s two goals in the opening period, which nullified Latvia’s 1-0 and 2-1 leads, and Matt Coronato’s go-ahead goal in the final period, it wasn’t enough to secure a medal for the United States.
Kristian Rubins, a formidable defenseman, is a force to be reckoned with on the ice. With his skilled play and unwavering determination, Rubins has established himself as a key contributor to his team’s success.

Team USA rejoiced on Wednesday, Sep 5, at the Mall of Asia Arena when they won by a large margin against Team Italy with a 100-63 victory. This sweet redemption came after their shocking loss to Lithuania last Sunday.
A brief recap of the USA’s loss to Lithuania
Last week took the world by surprise, as fans did not expect the American players to fall prey to the Lithuanians’ strong strategic start, making their first nine shots from three-point range and building a 21 point lead in the second quarter. Despite the effort to close the gap in the third quarter (28-17) and fourth quarter (39-39) of the game, Team USA could simply not catch up and ultimately suffered their first defeat in 10 games this summer.

“They just punched us in the mouth. Right away, they made every shot. They executed. I don’t think it was a case of us not being ready. I think it was a case of them playing a perfect first quarter and us understanding how hard we’re going to have to play.”, Coach Kerr (USA) said.
Kerr also said that although they had secured their quarterfinal and 2024 Paris Olympic spots before the match, he still hated losing.
“I hate losing,” Kerr said. “I probably won’t sleep much tonight, but for us to get better, we needed to feel this. We needed to respond the way we did. Next game, we have to start the way we did the second half. We can’t ease into the game at all.” Coach Kerr (USA) said.
Team USA: 100-63 victory over Italy
With a renewed sense of competitiveness and a refusal to succumb to their previous defeat, Team USA took Coach Kerr’s advice to heart and did not ease into the game at all.
Early on in the game, the USA made sure that the world knew that they were back with fire and determination. In the first quarter, they led the game by a 10-point margin, 24-14. Not giving Italy a chance to recover, this advantage continued into the second and third quarters, where, by the end, they were up by 39 points against Italy. Losing by only two points in the fourth and final quarter, the USA triumphed over Italy with a 100-63 victory, proudly securing a spot in the final four and competing in the semifinals against Germany.
Mikal Bridges, Tyrese Haliburton, and Bobby Portis Jr. were hailed as game leaders in the match. Bridges recorded a total of 24 points and one block for his team. Haliburton, on the other hand, had a total of 3 assists and 3 steals. And finally, for the rebound department, in which the Team USA also dominated with 51-33, Portis registered a total of 7 rebounds for the team.
This marks the U.S.’s best start to a game since the commencement of the World Cup, and it was evident that the Americans had learned their lessons from their previous loss, as Brunson and Bridges asserted that it was essential for the team to “set the tone” at the beginning of the match.
“Our main focus was our energy and how we start the game, and how we set the tone. We did that throughout the course of the game and I’m proud of how we’ve responded and we got to be ready for the next game,” Brunson said.

Coach Kerr, who was pleased at USA’s redemption in the MOA arena, said that joy and competitiveness go hand in hand.
In the latest FIBA rankings released on September 15th, the USA dethroned Spain and took over their original spot with 786.6 points.
FIBA rankings 2022
Last year, when the FIBA rankings came out, it was bad news for the US – Spain had just put an end to their 12-year basketball dynasty. Spain had moved up to number one, while the US had dropped to number two with a score of 757.5. Spain’s success at the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 and FIBA EuroBasket 2022, as well as their quarterfinal run at the Tokyo Olympics, enabled them to overtake the United States by a margin of 1.1 points.
This year, the tables turned when the USA returned to the top of the leaderboard thanks to its consistent performance at major championships over the past three years.
FIBA World Cup 2023
The USA had an impressive run at the beginning of the World Cup. They had an impressive winning streak until they went head to head with Lithuania and lost with 104-110. Although they had already secured spots in the quarterfinals and the Paris Olympics, before the game even started, they were still affected by their first loss.
The USA went on to beat Italy, but then lost to Germany. They also lost against Canada, missing out on the chance to at least claim the bronze medal.
With the dismal fourth place finish, this put the USA in a state of disarray, consequently sending their fans into a tailspin.
Redemption at FIBA rankings 2023
Although the United States did not win a medal at the FIBA World Cup, the Americans were able to reclaim the number one ranking in FIBA. The United States had a record of 786.6 points, and Spain was in second place with 778.6 points.
In addition to this, there were other significant shifts in the rankings, beginning with Germany, who won their first World Cup title and moved up to third place from 11th last year. Germany saw a big jump in their score this year, going up from 640.8 to 759.7.
After winning the bronze medal, Canada, which had 745.5 points, moved up nine spots in the world rankings, moving from 15th to 6th. Serbia also moved up from 6th to 5th with 755.6 points. However, the biggest change this year has come from Latvia, who have risen 22 spots to 8th place thanks to their incredible underdog performance that got them 5th in FIBA World Cup.

One fan also commented on the post, saying that they can now call themselves “World Champions”, alluding to Noah Lyles’ post-meet trash talk that seemingly questioned the NBA’s World Championship title.

The US women’s World Cup team survive to fight another day. After being almost upset by Portugal in a nail-biting match at Eden Park in Auckland, the Americans have advanced to the round of 16.
Fans were on the edge of their seats as Portugal, the 21st-ranked team in the world playing in their first World Cup, threatened to upset the defending champions.
Team USA, renowned for their domination, found it difficult to control the game. When Ana Capeta of Portugal nearly engineered an upset with a shot that rocked the post in stoppage time, the tension increased.
Vlatko Andonovski’s determined Americans, however, ended the game in a tie and thus secured second place in Group E, advancing to the next round. Portugal, finishing third in the group, bowed out of the tournament.
The Netherlands topped Group E after shocking Vietnam 7-0 and advanced to the next round with the Americans. Vietnam, who earlier put up a fight against the Americans, finished last in the group.
The Americans, who entered the tournament as favourites, will now square off against Sweden, the Group G winners. Sweden trounced the US 3-0 in the Tokyo Olympics quarter-finals in 2021. Given that both sides have displayed their strength in thrilling games throughout the campaign, the task at hand is sure to be anything but simple.
Going into the next round, the Americans have points to ponder.
Past performance: The US performance contrasts sharply with their feats in the previous World Cup when they swept all three of their group games with an astounding 18 goals.
Youthful adjustment: Coach Andonovski recognises the team’s youth and urges patience, but a quick turnaround is necessary to make it through the knockout stage.
Historic challenge: The US are under tremendous pressure to maintain their historic World Cup heritage, given their perfect history of making the semifinals in every previous tournament.
Though far from their best against Portugal, the Americans still had their moments. Williams made a valiant effort in an exciting World Cup debut, giving her team the greatest opportunities in the first half. She was denied a goal by a last-second stop from keeper Ines Pereira. The US made a great second-half start, relying on seasoned player Megan Rapinoe to support their attack.
However, opportunities were few, and a last-minute booking for Naomi Girma increased tension. The riveting contest of skill and tenacity kept the audience on tenterhooks. The game ended in a tie, but the audience emerged winners, if they could bear the suspense, that is.
In the FIH Hockey Women’s Nations Cup on Monday in Valencia, Spain, India held off a late comeback by Japan to clinch a 2-1 victory.
India beats Japan in women’s hockey
When Salima Tete changed direction and tackled two Japanese defenders inside the penalty area in the fifth minute, she gave India the lead. She then calmly finished the play by putting the ball beyond Eika Nakamura.
Then, in the 40th minute, a young Jharkhand player named Beauty Dungdung scored her first senior-level international hockey goal with a magnificent effort as she made her way through a determined Japanese hustle.
Rui Takashima’s goal in the 49th minute gave Japan a chance to tie the score, but India held on to earn their second victory in as many games despite Japan’s valiant effort in the final period.
In the tournament’s first game of Pool B, Pool B’s opening match saw India defeat Chile 3-1. Now in control of Pool B and on the verge of securing a position in the final four is the Savita Punia-led team, which has six points after two games.
In the event that Chile and South Africa, hockey players who are scheduled to play later on Monday, tie their game. Thus, India will advance to the semifinals. To guarantee their spot in the last four, they must draw with South Africa in their final league game on December 14 if they don’t.
India launched a barrage of attacks to start the game, and it was player of the match Tete who finally handed them the advantage with a brilliant finish. They could have easily scored a couple more, but the team led by Janneke Schopman’s coaching staff continued to struggle with their penalty corner conversions.
India received nine attempts from PC, but none of them could be converted because it remained their top priority.
