Alex de Minaur, currently ranked ninth in the world, is one of the nine tennis players selected for Australia’s Olympic tennis team. Moreover, the women’s singles draw will feature just one Australian, Ajla Tomljanovic, in Paris.
Three years after being disqualified from the Tokyo Olympics due to COVID-19, de Minaur is scheduled to make his Olympic debut in Paris.
The athlete said: “Obviously last time round I got a little bit unlucky to not be able to play in Tokyo, but I’ve had my eyes set on Paris and I am super excited to now be officially part of this team.”
Team Australia’s Olympic tennis team
Men’s singles players Alexei Popyrin, Chris O’Connell, and Rinky Hijikata will compete alongside de Minaur. Men’s doubles world No. 1 Matt Ebden will partner with Tokyo Olympics bronze-winning mixed doubles player John Peers. De Minaur and Popyrin will also participate in the men’s doubles category. More so, in women’s doubles, Ellen Perez, the ninth-ranked player in the world, will partner Daria Saville.
Lleyton Hewitt, a triple Olympian and two-time Grand Slam singles champion, will lead the men’s team. On the other hand, Sam Stosur, the only five-time Olympian from Australia and the 2011 U.S. Open singles champion, will captain the women’s team.
The Paris Olympics tennis event, which takes place at Roland Garros from July 27 to August 4, will be held on clay court for the first time since Barcelona in 1992.
