World No. 9 Maria Sakkari is back on court after participating at the WTA Finals in Cancun, Mexico.
The Greek player is currently participating in the second edition of the Tennis Fest in Mexico City together with some of the biggest names in the sport, namely World No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz, Danish sensation Caroline Wozniacki, and US Star Tommy Paul.
In one of her interviews, though, she touched on the topic of how her mental coach had helped her in the past 5-6 years.
Sakkari: “It changed the way I’m thinking”
Sakkari broached the subject of having a mental coach without the slightest trace of hesitancy. For the past “five or six years,” she claims, she has been seeking competent advice not only for her competitions but also for her life outside the court.
Sakkari said that it improved her as a person, and to her, that meant “above everything.” According to the Greek player, one can undoubtedly perform better on the court if they can accomplish and unlock things off the court.
She stated that it was perhaps the greatest gift she’d ever given herself.
“I would suggest it to every single person. Working with someone who specializes in that doesn’t mean you have a problem. It means you just want to become a better version of yourself. It’s a great investment that you can actually do,” Sakkari said, via TV Azteca Deportes.
Sakkari’s recent accomplishment
Although Sakkari suffered a dismal loss back at the US Open in August and cried heart-wrenchingly in front of the media afterwards, she was able to pick herself up and chose to compete over taking a break.
“Maybe I should take a break, I’m suffering on the court,” Sakkari said after her defeat against Swiss-born Spanish player Rebeka Masarova in the first round of US Open.
The following month, Sakkari staged a powerful comeback at the Guadalajara Open and clinched her second WTA title after four long years.
Sakkari also stepped in place of Karolina Muchova and competed at the WTA Finals in Cancun, Mexico.
