World No. 1 Jannik Sinner announced that he had withdrawn his participation from the Paris Masters because of a virus.
With this shocking news, the athlete said in a message shared by the organizers: “I’m very disappointed to tell you that I am not able to play here at this tournament. I came here very early to prepare and then I felt sick… I have a virus at the moment, which will pass in the next two or three days. Body-wise, I am not ready to compete.”
He added: “I am very sorry for that. I will see you guys (in Paris) next year. Hopefully, it will be a great year. And this year – without me. Hopefully, I’ll see you next year.”
In a social media post, Sinner also stated: “This is not an easy announcement to make. My team and I arrived early to prepare as best as possible, but unfortunately, I started feeling unwell during training and saw the doctor on Sunday. It turns out I’ve come down with a virus. I’m feeling better now, but I’m still not ready to compete here in Paris.
“I was really looking forward to this tournament, so it’s disappointing, to say the least. For now, I’m focusing on recovery and getting back to 100%. I’ll be aiming to come back stronger for Turin! 🇮🇹🙏🏻” he said.
Recently, 23-year-old Sinner defeated Carlos Alcaraz in the final match of the Six Kings Slam event and took home the prize money of $6 million. His place in the competition has now been allotted by a draw to Frenchman Arthur Cazaux.
In similar news, Novak Djokovic, the 24-time Grand Slam champion, also exited the same event, which is the final 1000-event of the year.
The Paris Masters commenced on October 28 and will run until November 3, 2024.
Jannik Sinner had little to celebrate even after a sensational first-time victory over Mackenzie McDonald at the Paris Masters this week. His match had begun shortly before midnight and continued until half past two a.m., leaving him exhausted.
Sinner withdraws from event
The Italian player was fresh off his Erste Bank Open victory when he landed in the city of lights. And after his impressive run of form over the past few weeks, including his stunning win over his nemesis, World No. 3 Daniil Medvedev, in Beijing and Vienna, respectively, people were wondering how he’d fare in the Paris Masters.
However, in a surprising turn of events, Sinner was forced to make a decision after a late-night match victory that left him drained.
Sinner started his match after midnight and finished it at 2:37 AM, recording scores 6-7 7-5 6-1 to prevail over American player McDonald in Round 32 of the Masters 1000 event.
A late-night game was one thing for Sinner, but to play just 14 hours later was another. And this was what prompted Sinner to mull things over.
There were high stakes in the competition, and he had a shot at progressing through the next rounds. But with such short turn-around time, his body, in the process, will most definitely get destroyed.
Opting to prioritize his health, Sinner decided that it would be best to withdraw from the event. He announced his decision on his social media X, saying, “I am sorry to announce that I am withdrawing from today’s match in Bercy. I finished the match when it was almost three in the morning and didn’t go to bed until a few hours later. I had less than 12 hours rest to prepare for the next game.”
“I have to make the right decision for my health and my body,” Sinner said in his post. “The weeks ahead with the ATP Finals at home and the Davis Cup will be very important, now I focus on preparing for these important events. See you in Turin.”
The ATP Tour also announced his withdrawal on X, writing: “Next stop: Turin. Following his late finish in his win against McDonald last night, @janniksin has withdrawn from the #RolexParisMasters.
Apparently, Sinner wasn’t the only one who was faced with the dilemma, as Djokovic was also just given a small window of time to recover from his previous game: 14.5 hours.
Enraged at ATP’s scheduling that forced Sinner out, the tennis fans rallied on social media and expressed their worries over the players.
One fan showed a timeline of Sinner’s schedule at the event and captioned it, “Tournament not up to par, poorly planned, players’ physical health not guaranteed. ATP, what are you for?”

While another fan stated, “What a sad state of affairs for the sport when one of your top players has to withdraw because of poor scheduling. Tennis does itself no favours & it’s organisation is to blame. If you want to bring people to the sport, this is NOT the way to do it! This is a shambles & shameful.”

Norwegian tennis player Casper Rudd also took a shot at the ATP for putting Djokovic in a tough position and said, “Bravo @atptour👏👏 way to help one of the best players in the world recover and be as ready as possible when he finished his previous match at 2:37 am this morning👍👍 14,5 hours to recover.. what a joke🤦

The world number one Jannik Sinner easily defeated Taylor Fritz to win the US Open and complete the year with two Grand Slam victories.
Sinner, who captured his maiden major championship in January at the Australian Open, won 6-3 6-4 7-5 despite a late surge by American 12th seed Fritz. This victory happened just 19 days after it was reported that, in March, he had twice tested positive for a prohibited substance and had been cleared of all charges.
In a social media post, the athlete said: “Incredibly special to win my second slam title here after a great two weeks. Thank you for all the support, it means so much. I love this sport and it means everything to me, time to enjoy this moment with my team and my family before we get back to work for the end of the year 👊🏼. The work never stops, we keep pushing.”
Fritz had a rough start in the first game as he dropped service in front of an enthusiastic home crowd. The 26-year-old bounced back nicely to win three straight games, but he kept making mistakes when serving, and Sinner took advantage to win the first game.
Fritz improved and made the second set closer, dropping just two points in four service games. But Sinner then demonstrated why he was the best in the world by stepping up his game, striking the winning blow as Fritz served to tie the set at 5-4.
After missing three early third-set breakpoint opportunities, Fritz enthralled the crowd with two spectacular winners to break for a 4-3 lead and save his hopes. But after two hours and sixteen minutes, Sinner put an end to Fritz’s hopes by breaking back just as he was about to serve for the set, and then winning the next two games.
Sinner making history
Sinner has become the first player to win his first two Grand Slam titles in the same season since Guillermo Vilas in 1977. Furthermore, he is the first Italian man to win Flushing Meadows’ singles championship.
Sinner and his alleged use of illegal drugs
It was reported by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) that Sinner was unintentionally tainted by his physiotherapist and was, therefore, not at fault or negligent for the adverse tests.
Despite his unfortunate loss to Jannik Sinner at the Shanghai Masters, former world number one Novak Djokovic viewed his overall performance in a positive light after bouncing back from poor form at the US Open.
After winning his first Olympics gold medal at the Paris Games, the 24-time Grand Slam champion lost to Alexei Popyrin in the third round of the US Open.
However, Djokovic looked in great condition at the Shanghai Masters, playing with excellent consistency all throughout his matches until he reached his fifth final at the ATP Masters 1000 event. Unfortunately, he lost to world number one Sinner 7-6(4), 6-3.
After the match, Djokovic said: “I think there’s quite a few positives that I can take. I think the level of my tennis was really good this tournament, probably best after the Olympics in terms of how I played, how I performed, how I fought.”
He added: “I did my best tonight. Under the circumstances, I felt maybe not 100 per cent fresh, but big credit to Jannik for playing the big points better than me, and that’s what made the difference. He deserved to win, he was just too strong in important moments… I still think that in the final today I played pretty good, which gives me reason to believe that I can still play with these guys that are the best in the world. Hopefully I can maintain that level in the upcoming months, and also for the future.”
In a social media post, Djokovic said: “Tough to take the L at a tournament so close to my heart, but it wasn’t meant to be today. Bravo @janniksin and to your team for today’s win and on an incredible year.”
He added: “To the people of Shanghai, and all Chinese fans, thank you for your support, your passion and your kindness. It’s been very special to be back here. See you soon.”
Sinner’s victory ended Djokovic’s hopes of adding a 100th singles to his collection of awards. After Roger Federer (103) and Jimmy Conners (109), he would have been the only man to reach this milestone.
He stated: “I’ve got to keep striving to make it happen somewhere in the near future, hopefully. It’s not a live-or-die type of goal for me… I think I’ve achieved all of my biggest goals in my career. Right now it’s really about Grand Slams and about seeing how far I can kind of push the bar for myself.”
The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) recently announced that the hearing for men’s world number one Jannik Sinner’s doping case will begin on April 16.
After failing two drug tests in March last year, which showed he had low levels of the anabolic androgenic steroid clostebol, the Italian athlete was cleared in August by an independent tribunal that accepted his claim of accidental contamination. It was claimed that the illegal substance was unintentionally administered during a massage by his physiotherapist.
However, the World Anti-Doping Agency challenged the ruling in September at CAS, and Sinner may still be suspended from the sport for up to two years.
CAS stated about the two-day hearing: “No parties requested a public hearing and it will be conducted behind closed doors.”
Sinner, who is preparing for his Australian Open title defence in Melbourne, stated that he was still unaware of the proceedings.
In a social media post, Sinner shared photos of his preparations with a caption: “@australianopen loading…⏳⏳”
After winning the Six Kings Slam in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, top tennis player in the world Jannik Sinner has made his name known once more.
Sinner secured the mind-blowing €5.5 million prize–the largest in tennis history yet– after his triumph over Carlos Alcaraz with a performance record of 6-7, 6-3, 6-3. With this recent achievement, Sinner continuously cements his dominance in the sports.
In a social media post, Sinner expressed: “Thank you Six Kings Slam for an incredible week! I enjoyed it a lot and what a privilege to play with so many great players. Always a pleasure to share the court with you @carlitosalcarazz . 🙏”
It is without doubt that the 2024 season has been incredible for Sinner. He claimed victories at the Australian Open and the US Open, and after facing youngster Carlos Alcaraz, the athlete displayed an exceptional game with strong serves that helped with his journey to the top. His tactics and consistency were his winning characteristics as he faced Alcaraz in a truly thrilling match.
Moreover, Saudi Arabia has been investing in hosting top-tier sports. With Sinner’s win at the Six Kings Slam, the place has been intentionally preparing its space for the tennis world. It is reported that the WTA finals are also set to take place in Saudi Arabia, which will mark another milestone for the country.
Due to his performance record this season, Sinner has a current win-loss record of 65-6. Indeed, this has been one of the best seasons in the sport.
