In the men’s 3000m steeplechase at the Paris Diamond League 2024 on Sunday, Indian runner Avinash Sable broke India’s national record. With a time of 8:09.91, the Asian Games champion beat his previous national record by more than a second. At Charlety Stadium, Sable’s outstanding performance won him a sixth-place finish in an extremely competitive field. Sable will compete in his second Olympic Games in Paris in a few weeks.
Abraham Sime of Ethiopia won the exciting race in first place with a personal best time of 8:02.36. Amos Serem, a Kenyan who won bronze in the Commonwealth Games, also registered an 8:02.36, but he lost in a thrilling photo finish.
Sable bettered his national record of 8:11.20 winning him a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games, Birmingham two years ago.
Paris Steeplechase: Elite Athletes Succeed in 3000m Match
Abraham Kibiwot, the bronze medalist from Kenya in the 2023 World Championships, finished in third place with a timing of 8:06.70 on Sunday in the 3000m steeplechase in Paris.
After him came Geordie Beamish, the 1500m indoor world champion from New Zealand, with a time of 8:09.64, and Mohamed Amin Jhinaoui, the holder of the national record for Tunisia, who finished in 8:09.41. The competition was even more exciting because this was Avinash Sable’s third 3000m steeplechase race of the year, out of the 17 contestants.
Sable, an Indian athlete, started his season strong, placing second in the Portland Track Festival in Orlando, Florida, with a time of 8:21.85. With a timing of 8:31.75, he won the inter-state race in Panchkula, India, last month, carrying on his impressive performance.
Sable will now compete in the same discipline for India at the 2024 Olympics in Paris. Kishore Jena, an athlete who is also headed to the Olympics, placed seventh in the javelin throw competition during that same tournament. His best throw was a remarkable 78.10 meters in his debut.
