Following an agreement reached by the PGA of America, players who will compete for the US Ryder Cup team will receive compensation to participate.
This will be the first time in the 98-year history of the games that either side has been compensated to compete. Each of the twelve players will get $500,000 (£400,000), with $300,000 (£240,000) going to charity or charities that each team member has selected.
PGA of America accepted the package and stated that ‘no players asked to be compensated’. They stated: “The players and captains, past and present, are responsible for the Ryder Cup becoming the most special competition in golf and one of the most in-demand events on the international sports scene.”
The US Ryder Cup points list will automatically qualify six players, and captain Keegan Bradley will select six wildcards.
Last year, Patrick Cantlay’s refusal to wear the American team cap at the match in Rome was reportedly a protest against the players’ lack of compensation for competing. Moreover, Rory McIlroy of Europe stated last month that he would pay to participate in the games, which will take place at Bethpage in New York.
Mcllroy admitted: “I personally would pay for the privilege to play in the Ryder Cup… The two purest forms of competition in our game right now are the Ryder Cup and the Olympics, and it’s partly because of that, the purity of no money being involved.”
At the 2023 Ryder Cup in Rome, where Europe prevailed, Cantlay’s cap stance caused local supporters to take off their headgear to mock the American. In the end, it resulted in a confrontation between McIlroy and Cantlay’s caddie Joe LaCava, who waved his cap near the Northern Irishman as he lined up a putt after his player had put in a long effort on the 18th hole in a match against Matt Fitzpatrick and the four-time major champion.
The PGA of America has announced that players who compete on the Saudi-backed breakaway LIV Golf tour will be eligible to play for the US Ryder Cup team. Moreover, the PGA Championship will also be open to LIV players.
In order to be eligible for the Ryder Cup, golfers must be members of the PGA of America, and the organization has recently added LIV to its roster of “approved tours”, granting those players membership.
The organization stated: “Going forward, all LIV Golf players are eligible for the PGA Championship and any American player who qualifies for the Ryder Cup on points or is added to the US team as a captain’s pick is eligible to compete.”
It is to be noted that last year, Brooks Koepka of LIV was a wildcard selection for the US team in the biennial competition versus Europe, but only due to a grace period that was in force after golf’s separation.
Next September, in New York’s Bethpage Black, the Ryder Cup tournament between the United States and Europe will take place.
On having an agreement
A “framework agreement” for a merger with Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, which supports LIV, was unveiled by the PGA and Europe’s DP World Tour last year. However, negotiations for men’s golf’s fracture are still going on.
LIV athletes can earn a spot on the European squad, but they must have participated in four tournaments hosted by the organization and maintained their DP World Tour membership. Playing on the LIV tour without a waiver from the European circuit could result in fines; but, if such sanctions are settled, they will still be allowed to compete.
The Memorial Tournament is one of those games that has a very serious motive to be played for. The goal to conduct this event is to honor the individuals who have made a mark or distinguished themselves in the game of golf living or dead. This is annually held and hosted at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio. The Tournament was founded and hosted by Jack Nicklaus.
The Memorial Tournament is in regard to the PGA Tour which was founded in the year 1976 by Jack Nicklaus. There are going to be 120 players as golf participants for the Memorial Tournament. Captain Zach Johnson must make a difficult decision regarding the team’s final six berths. The 2023 PGA Championship winner Brooks Koepka drops to seventh place as a result of Schauffele and Homa’s noteworthy advance in the standings.
Zach Johnson talks about his 2023 Ryder Cup captain picks and the unusual decisions to come
The upcoming captain’s announcement takes center stage as spectators clutch their breath, revealing the six best players based on their team efforts. Questions are raised about the LIV golfers’ participation as the spotlight remains on them.
Despite obstacles Saudi Circuit players experienced in auto-qualification because of a Tour suspension, there is cause for optimism because the captain’s call has the ability to change their course.
Zach Johnson, the captain of the US team for the Ryder Cup, provided a sneak peek at his selection process on a recent episode of the Golf Subpar podcast. Johnson wants to select six highly skilled Americans, primarily from the PGA Tour ranks, but with some flexibility. It’s an engrossing glimpse into the impending confrontation, where hope and opportunity collide in the race for Ryder Cup triumph.
The Presidents Cup concluded as it has for the previous 19 years—with a victory for Team USA.
With a spectacular finish at the Royal Montreal Golf Club in Canada, Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley secured the winning point as the star-studded American team defeated the International Team 18.5–11.5. This marked the team’s tenth consecutive triumph in the biennial competition.
Highlights of the competition
Xander Schauffele, the two-time major champion this year, defeated Jason Day of Australia in a 4&3 (four ahead with three holes to play) match that set the tone for the 12 final singles matches. After leading 11–7 into the fourth and final day, captain Jim Furyk’s team needed just 3.5 more points to win.
Despite the fact that world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler lost to Hideki Matsuyama, Bradley secured yet another US triumph when opponent Kim Si-woo was unable to convert from 10 feet on the final hole.
For Bradley, who hadn’t played for the US since losing the game that finalized a crushing Ryder Cup loss to Europe in 2014, it was a full-circle moment that had been waiting for ten years. He admitted: “The last time I played in one of these, I was the clinching point for the Europeans in the Ryder Cup. Fast-forward 10 years later and I got to do that today. Really something I’ll remember the rest of my life… I learned a lot from Jim and Tabitha (Furyk) this week. It was the best job I’ve ever seen done as captain and the captain’s wife.”
International Team gave a fight
Seeking their first victory since 1998, the International Team did not give up easily.
After an opening 5-0 US blitz, captain Mike Weir’s International Team rallied with a sweep of their own on Friday to tie the game at 5-5, with motivated young South Korean player Tom Kim setting the tone for the comeback.
The 22-year-old, who has previously won three times on the PGA Tour, caused a stir when playing Scheffler in a fourball match the day before. He was all ablaze with excitement after making a long birdie putt, but he moved on to the next tee before Scheffler’s subsequent missed putt.
Despite disclosing that Kim had “poked the bear”, Masters winner Scheffler dismissed the episode as a normal part of the game, saying, “We’re friends after, we’re not friends during.”
However, team USA assistant captain Kevin Kisner called Kim’s choice to leave the game prior to Scheffler’s putt a “bush league” move. He admitted: “They took gamesmanship too far and over the line on sportsmanship and lost some integrity.”
More so, after accusing the American team of cursing at him on Saturday, Kim found himself at the heart of the drama once more.
Kim joined up with fellow countryman Kim Si-woo once more for an exciting foursomes match against Cantlay and Schauffele after defeating Bradley and Wyndham Clark.
Tom Kim stated: “As it got towards the end, it got a little feisty out there. I could hear some players cursing at us… I don’t think there was good sportsmanship there. But it’s all part of the fun. I understand it. The US team definitely motivated us to go out there.”
Schauffele denied the allegations, stating that he and Cantlay showed utmost respect to their opponents.
The world No. 2 stated: “We’re trying to quiet the crowds down when they were hitting… I have no clue if anyone was doing any of that. I don’t believe any of our guys would do something like that. So I’m not sure what he was hearing.”
Kim added: “This event is all about doing things you would never do and creating energy and doing all these things. If I do certain things on the greens when I make putts, I expect them to do the same thing. It’s all part of the game. It was just about that.”
Rory Mcllroy denied rumors that he was considering a transfer to LIV Golf and declared his intention to play on the PGA Tour for the remainder of his career. Sources said Mcllroy was close to making the $850 million transfer to LIV. However, the Northern Ireland player and four-time major winner quickly denied the allegations.
He expressed: “I honestly don’t know how these things get started… I’ve never been offered a number from LIV, I’ve never contemplated going to LIV. Again, I think I’ve made it clear over the past two years that I don’t think it’s something for me,”
Rory Mcllroy – No to LIV
In the context of continuing talks with the PGA Tour over a merger, McIlroy, who has been more understanding with LIV professionals in recent months, reaffirmed that he had no resentment against golfers who have joined the circuit.
“One of the things I think I’ve realized over the past two years is that people can make their own decisions on whatever they think is best for themselves… Who are we to judge them for that? But personally, for me my future is here on the PGA Tour and it’s never been any different,” Mcllroy admitted.
“I’m here today and playing a PGA Tour next week and I’ll play the PGA Tour for the rest of my career,” he added.
Since its founding, LIV has signed a number of golf’s finest players. The most recent high-profile addition to the roster was Spanish player Jon Rahm, who switched teams in December of last year in a deal reportedly for $500 million.
